Okay, heres my situation. I had saved up for a set of z-680, but now a friend of mine has offered to buy my 9800pro off me. So this gives me an opportunity to purchase one of the following combo's:

Albatron 6800GT and the Logitech Z-5300e

or

x850xt and nothing else

or

Logitech z-680 and a 6600gt

What should i do? (remember i'm in Australia so no x800xl unfortunately)

Hmm, interesting, i can cope with headphones for awhile :D , is the x850xt much better than the 6800gt? I play at 1152x864 with as much AA and AF as possible because i only have a 17inch CRT (yes i know, its flatscreen CRT though lol).

ATI has always had a track of better image quality, hence the More AA and AF it can handle.

Correction...ATi had better image quality for about 2 years while Nvidia was selling FX's...before that they were worse (quack anyone?)...and now Nvidia has caught back up to them...

Get the 6800GT and the Speakers. You won't notice a real difference in FPS between the GT and the XT (maybe none in OpenGL games). And you want to have the thundering bass of a rocket attack. And the image quality of the GT's is as good or better than the XT.
 
note... additional correction.

nvidia did not catch up w/ ati...................THEY SURPASSED THEM by a long shot.

right now nvidia is faster.

the drivers are better.

and they have more features like pixel shader 3.0 while ati can only do 2.0

and then add in SLI and vola.

i vote 6800GT. or any 6800 for that matter.
 
Theres a couple reason's I'd like to stick with ATI. Temporal AA and Triple Buffering. I'm not sure if Nvidia has Triple buffering or not but I really liked it. How long do you think a x850xt will last until I have to start playing at 1024x768 without AA and AF? Couple years?

I'd like to see nvidia get in on the triple buffering deal...I dunno why they don't have that...temporal AA I could care less about...seems like more of a gimmick than anything...

The current gen of ATi cards are great...they're just on the brink of being obsolete...but they do an excellent job of playing current games and I'm sure they'll continue to do so for a while...the only real difference in here is in the hearts and minds of the consumer...Nvidia cards have more bells and whistles...and people want as many bells and whistles as possible when they're spending $500 on a video card...
 
Yeh thats my point, should i go with the top end x850xt if its going to be obsolete soon. But the thing is i can't wait for the R520 or G70 or whatever, because i have the opportunity to sell my 9800pro for a very nice figure (his offer not mine, plus i told him about the 6600gt). So i need a graphics card soon. With the 6800gt is it actually powerfull enough to utilise these features with an acceptable framerate? Because i don't particularly like playing at 1024 res anymore as i'm doing with my 9800pro.

Get an x800xl or a 6800GT...you can find either close to or even under $300...and the performance is not that far off from the x850xt...that should tide you over till you're ready for the dual G70/R520 box later this year...;)

No doubt. x850 XT is not worth the extra money. When people tell you to spend thousands on a sound system and get a x850XT, that should give you an idea of their priorities. :p
 
Yeh it'll have to be a 6800gt because we don't have x800xl's in AGP form here in Australia yet. Man a dual R520/G70 would be frickin sweet :cool: One strange thing here is that you can get the x850xt is cheaper than most x800xt's :confused:

I'm thinking the most sensible idea would be the 6800GT and the Logitech 5300e. How much of an improvement is a 6800GT over my 9800pro and what are they like for source games? I can run Half-Life 2 at 1024x768 4xAA 16xAF and have it rarely go under 50fps with my 9800pro.

Get the z-5500 digital, which replace the z-680's. Avoid the z-5300e's. The new colors look like ass, and aesthetics count for something.

Forget dropping a few thousand for surround sound. Most expensive systems aren't designed for the listening levels and proximity that are normal for computer gaming. It'd be a total waste even for the most sophisticated audiophile. Unless you're playing DVD-Audio of the London Philharmonic in a hydroponic cell, the top of the line Logitech speakers will do just fine.
 
Slight problem with that rcolbert, the z-5500 cost a lot more than the z-680 here and i need a graphics card most importantly so I wouldn't be able to get both. And theres no way i'm going to spend thousands on a sound system if i'm off to uni next year. But yeh if i had the money, for sure i would get the z-5500 over the z-680's. Sadly no money tree.
