Hi, I was wondering which client(multicore or GPU) would be best, I already leave my PC running almost 24hrs a day, but do alot of heavy stuff(PS, video work, gaming) and dont want it interfering with tasks, Im leaning towards the CPU client since I can set it to a specific core, anything else that might be helpful?

Use the VmWare client and turn it off when you are using it heavily.Other times you can let it run.

You'll get far more PPD out of the GPU client, and I would think that you could set the priority down on the GPU client as well so that it doesn't interfere with your graphic / video work.

I use the system tray version of the GPU client, if I'm about to play a game I just right click the icon and pause it. I've never had any trouble with system stability while playing games with the client paused and it has never had trouble resuming.

A 920 i7 will get more ppd than the 9600gso ;)

another valid point haha, I know the 920 is a powerful processor, and my GPU is rather anemic but I keep hearing GPUs do exponentially more work faster so IDK were ny components balance out

How involved do you want to get? Once set up a GPU/Notfred's SMP setup would be fairly easy to maintain and would put out a good chunk of points. Setting up notfreds can be tricky but it really isn't too bad and there is a ton of good info in the guides sticky. Plus everyone around here loves to help newcomers.

Just enough that it doesn't interfere with my work/tasks, something along the lines of set it and forget it

GPU then, the classic client is equally simple, but the GPU client will get a lot more work done.

I've been running GPU for a few hours now and Im happy, now can I setup SMP so I can quickly have it running? like say I leave for 8-10 hours, and right before I leave can double click and have it going?

You should be able to hit about 6000ppd pretty easily if you use a VMWare player instance with Notfred on that i7. Taking it to 4GHz should net you easily 10k ppd. However, if you run a full Linux distro on that VMware instance, and run the -bigadv WUs, maybe 20-25k? Comapred to that, your GPU will pale in comparison. You can run a client on that if you want, it will add more ppd, but not much compared to your i7.

so I setup a VMware and set it with 4 threads, and hit TJ maxx in about 3 minutes lol

stock clocks, stock cooler, I did mess up when I mounted it, so im sure some of the paste got messed up

You can get about 10k ppd out of a 4 core VM and the GPU on that rig.

I just got my i7. Tweeking it a bit :D Lets just say I'm not running stock

cleaned the dust out and turned on all the tricools on high in the case, now Im sitting around 70-75*C with 100% cpu usage and gpu folding

EDIT: knocking on 80* :p TJ maxx here I come! (again...) :(

Case and fans don't make as much of a difference on CPU temps as the cooler. Are you using the stock Intel HS?

it did in my case, before I was hitting TJ maxx in minutes, all I changed was clean the dust and ran all the case fans on high, now I have let it run for 13 hours now and havent even hit 80*

yes stock cooler

anybody see anything wrong with my FAHlog? is the problem lack of WUs? or something else?

Looks like a Stanford server problem assuming everything else is fine on your end.

alright, the GPU client runs and connects fine, just wasnt sure, I'm restarting F@H and redownloaded everything to get SMP in a VM, but havent gotten it going.

Give it some time, Stanford has also experienced WU shortages for the SMP client. Don't know if this problem has been resolved yet. So, it could be one issue or the other.

The dust cleaning would have helped a lot more than turning the case fans on high. They don't do much at all.

does it have anything to do with the version Im using? 6.02

I just uninstalled everything and went with a MPICH install, so far so good...

That seems a bit long on an i7 OC-ed like yours.

Do you have HT on?
Are all 8 cores at 100%
Are you running inside a VM?

this is at stock speeds, I had a problem with a piece of hardware and reset the BIOS, havent gotten around to restoring my OC

Low 3's, depending on unit. You might beat that with 4Ghz - my numbers were with 3.78.
