Im working on a budget upgrade and am hoping to solicit your opinions on the best and cheapest CPU to get that would take a light overclock.

What Im looking at is either:

E2160

or

E2180

Only a $6 difference.

Whats the best CHEAP upgrade for CPUs?

This is a no brainer :p. Go with the E2180. Guaranteed 2.0Ghz and it has a higher multiplier which is always a plus!

e2180 = winner even though it won't matter much when overclocking....

they both have the same OC potential, btw -- but as mentioned above, its easier to OC with a higher CPU multiplier.

These chips are usually good for the low 3ghz's. They do often exhibit issues with higher fsb's though so a higher multiplier is definitely good. For 6 extra dollars, why not.

But that said, I have seen these cpu's go for extremely cheap, namely at fry's when they have one of their crazy combo deals. Too bad there's no frys around here

LOL for a $6 diff., did you think anyone would recommend for the 2160???

if it's what you want to hear, sure, get the 2160 & use the money saved for a bag of chips & a couple beverages to accompany ;)

Damn, $50 or so for an almost guaranteed 3Ghz. This stuff is insanely cheap, I'm gonna end up with a room full of PC's!

seriously. Being who I am, I'm obliged to be wanting to upgrade to a wolfdale or q6600. But the smarter move would have been to just get one of these e2xxx's and save up the cash.

But each time I see these good deals for e2xxx's, I just want to get a cheap board and ram while it's still cheap and with the rest of the spare parts I have, build up a real nice media center / server pc.
