I have been trying to decide for a cpl weeks now between the x1950xt ($220 a/r), 8800gts ($370 a/r) and the 8800gtx ($530 a/r). The only thing I've done is give myself a cpl headaches. Current system specs:
x2 3800 @ 2.6ghz
2gig ddr 500 @ 1:1
7800gt @ 480/1200
x-fi fatality

I use a 19in lcd, so max rez is 1280x1024 and I don't see myself "upgrading" it anytime soon as I am happy with it. Just looking for suggestions, even if it is another option over one listed here or even to stay with what I have....

Thanks,
Flak

I'm trying to upgrade to a system like that currently, i think i'll be happy too, but i plan to run 2 7800GT's in SLI which will be great for gaming at 1600x1200, so i think if you limit is 1280x1024, then you may like 7800GT SLI also (if you have a SLI psu, and mobo)

I Game at 1600x1200 on most games (prey, NFS: MW) through a 21" CRT compaq monitor and all is pretty good with a single 7800GT. I do know more current games are better played at 1280x1024 on a single 7800GT though :(

well if u have the money go with the 8800gtx, but if u dont, then go witht he 8800gts

I have to say... I dont agree with any of the advice given so far. Im not sure why you would EVER buy 2 7800gt's right now, they would be expensive for the performance, they would use a lot of power, and there is always the problems that can happen with running SLI.

If you are using a 19" LCD display (12x10) then it would be overkill to get an 8800gts. 12x10 is a fairly low resolution these days. I would go for the x1950xt, as it will allow you to max any game out at that res. (I have a 7800gtx and can max every game i have (~50-60fps) on a 22" (1650x1080) widescreen)

If you're going to keep your current monitor for a while, i would suggest you buy the cheaper card now, and then upgrade you card accordingly once you get a monitor that supports higher resolutions.

I agree with this, good advice in my opinion.

well if he gets a 8800gts right now then he would have the max for every game, and he would be future proofed for a new monitor and dx10. so ya go with a 8800gts and if ur not getting the perforamnce u want in like three years just add another so u can do sli. if u do sli right now and arent satisfied with the results then that would be a waste. so ya go witht the 8800gts.

No question. 8800 GTS. DirectX10 capable. Will play any game on maximum settings. My friend has a similar setup and he bought the 8800 GTS recently. He loves it. Since I am stuck with the X1900GT, I have to go through the pain of listening to him hit 100 FPS on max settings in this game and that game.

"I don't see myself "upgrading" it anytime soon as I am happy with it"

Why would he buy a card that is WAY overkill for his current monitor if he doesnt think he's gonna be upgrading anytime soon? Wouldn't it make more sense to buy a card when he upgrades his monitor? (Since an 8800gts will probably cost half what it does now, and there will be much better cards out in the same price bracket)

An x1950xt will allow you to max any game out right now, with very high frame rates.

"go with a 8800gts and if ur not getting the perforamnce u want in like three years just add another so u can do sli"

That is horrible advice, in 3 years, not only will it be hard to find another 8800gts, but there will be cards out that cost half as much for double the performance. SLI is NEVER and economical upgrade path, it is just a way for people with an excess of money to get the best performance possible at a certain time.

"I have to go through the pain of listening to him hit 100 FPS "

Or you could laugh at him, and tell him about how once you break the 60fps mark, the human eye can't tell a difference. (Meaning it doesn't matter whether you're getting 60fps or 6000fps, it will look the same)

Another vote for the 8800 GTS. For $150 more, you get a much better product, in terms of performance and image quality. Plus you'll be ready for DX10 content and since you don't intend to change your monitor anytime soon, a 8800 GTS will let you max all in-game settings for quite a while, without stuttering.
If you still have doubts on what to do, after all these suggestions, I recommend you wait until February, where a $300 version of the GTS will be launched. According to news, it's exactly the same card as the 8800 GTS you can buy now, but it has half the video memory (320 MB instead of 640 MB). With it around, there simply is no reason NOT to have a 8800 card, unless you don't use your computer for games or other heavy 3D apps :)

I agree with the advice for getting the X1950XT. As a matter of fact, I just purchased one myself yesterday. I've seen too many topics posted about people having problems with the drivers to be confident about getting an 8800 series card, plus they're just too damn expensive for my taste. DX10 means zero to me at this point, because I don't plan on going Vista until next year, maybe. Since I'll be waiting a year for the OS and DX10, I might pick up a 8800 series card at that time, at a significantly reduced price. Until then, I'm sure the X1950XT will do me just fine at 1280x1024... ;)
