Which card would compliment this system?

System concept: Gaming platform : Doom3/FarCry/UT2K4/Tribes3/Whatever else

Athlon64 3200+ s754 | Athlon64 3500+ s939
Namebrand mobo
2x512gb pc3200 Corsair/Crucial/Kingston ram
Antec/Thermaltake/??? 400w+ PS
Generic Case +- $60
*Video Card*

Total: +/-$1000

Everything else will be scrap parts. Looking to keep total computer cost under or at $1000. Video card should be an appropriate selection based off system specs. I.E. a GF6800Ultra goes well with anything, but that could be overkill for this system. And a Radeon 9800 is probably a bottleneck. So what 'fits'?

Any and all suggestions welcome (i.e. wait 1 month for new technology release, etc etc)

Depends on how much you plan on gaming and what games you plan on playing. Casual gamer could settle for a 9800pro to a 6800NU. If you want to go the hardcore route then go with a 6800GT/Ultra and spend the money.

the 6800 FX 128 card might be what your looking for.. its about 150 less then the GT and about 250 less then the Ultra. I havent heard much about it preformance-wise though.

im getting it in my system... ordering it in a few days....

If it's a gaming platform and you're into games, you should do your best to stump up for a 6800GT/Ultra/XT PE.

If you want to shave the costs down, get a 6800NU, which comfortably outperforms the 9800Pro in 95%+ of benchmarks. Again, less than a GT could be a false economy if you find yourself feeling like you really should have spent that bit extra on the faster card a little while after purchasing....

Also, if you are playing at 12x10 res or higher, the 6800NU really seems to bog down badly when you turn up the AA and AF. I've seen a 256Mb 9800Pro outperform one a couple of times at this level in tests, so I'd guess the lack of memory (128Mb) becomes an issue, rather than a lack of outright grunt.

Damnations! I keep breaking by $1000 (which secretly goes to $1200) bankroll for this system. Really want that a64 3500+ for future proofing. Guess im just gonna have to wait another couple of paychecks to get it. I think im sold on the 6800GT now.

Lol - I think anyone who is keen enough to spend $1000+ to enjoy playing games is always going to yearn for better than they can afford. If you're that sort of person (I am), you'll kick yourself for not hanging on and getting the 3500+/GT
