Which card to get?

Hey everyone,
I'm looking at upgrading my PC, and so I'm asking the age old question "Which card(s) would be best suitable for me?".
I'd like to be able to run all the latest games (stuff like Batman, Skyrim, MW3, etc.) in 1920x1200.
Preferably with all the effects turned on, at max.

Any advice?

either spend alot of $ and get a 1.5gig 7950 or wait for the 580 to drop in price after the 7950 releases

While a GTX 560 Ti 448 Core or HD 6950 2GB would suffice for games out now at 1080p; I'd recommend stepping it up and getting at least an HD 7950 if you want your card to last you longer. We already see games out now (Metro 2033, Battlefield 3, RAGE, Crysis 2 w/ DX11 & HD Texture Mods, Modded Skyrim) that are pushing these cards to their limits to get decent frames per second at max settings. In all honesty, even for 1080p now, I wouldn't get a card that has less than 2GB VRam. I've seen almost all my VRam (1.5GB) get eaten up at max settings (4x AA) at 1080p in most of the games I listed previously.

Of course if the thread starter could state what his/her budget is then we could narrow it down more precisely.
 
As cannondale said, it really depends on your system specs to determine whether or not there will be a bottleneck. But as a general rule of thumb that I would recommend is to get at least a GTX 560 Ti (or 448) 2GB of VRAM or 6950 2GB of vram or higher.
 
I am also looking to upgrade my 5870 1gb, probably go for a 6950 and unlock it.

that would barely be an upgrade even if you make it a 6970. I would just oc your 5870 and wait for a decent deal on a 7950 or 7970. of course the rest of your system better be decent enough to justify running a card like that.

In terms of what the rest of the system is...well, there is no system.
I'm looking at building a new system.

Spec-wise, I'm possibly looking at:
i7 (was initially thinking of going for the 2600K, but now might go 3930K).
RAM - 16GB Corsair
HDD - Either 240GB Corsair SSD or Crucial 256GB + 3TB Samsung
Motherboard - Maybe the Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 or Asus PX79
Power Supply - This one I'm unsure about. Thinking a 850W, but haven't worked out which brand yet.

Graphics card-wise, I'm unsure what I need to do HD gaming easily. I was thinking I needed to go GTS 580/590 or HD 6970/6990. Hence I was asking the experts.

Budget-wise, I haven't set an actual price. It's all pretty fluid at this stage.
