I currently have two 22" LCD's and a 24in LCD. I would like to get a new card so I could use eyefinity. I originally was just going to pick up a 6850, but would it be better to pick up the 6870 or 6970 over it? Cheaper is obviously better, but if I can spend a few dollars more for performance I would.

If you can find a reference 6950 and unlock it that's the bang for the buck. Simpler games like l4d/portal source type games run perfect in eyefinity. However Metro 2033, etc the harder titles will need MUCH lower res or you'll need to run them on a single monitor.
The BEST would be the 6990 but that's to much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for me.
It sounds like it' hard to find a unlockable card, do they sell them anywhere? I don't expect to play on the highest settings for all 3 monitors. Hopefully games like SWTOR will run fine, but for the mega titles, I assume it will be painful to run in the 3 monitors.

unlocks like a dream. wait for it to come back in stock. All three of mine unlocked in about two minute's work.

I'm not sure if you can run mis-matched monitors in EF though. Some people with three 24" monitors from different vendors have trouble. I have trhee Dell 24" monitors, two 2408 and one 2410 and have had no trouble. Another thing, make damn sure one of your monitors is DP native connectable. The DP adapters have been the bane of EF.
I don't think the new twin frozr iii unlocks, mine didn't. However my twin frozr ii did, but I bought that used off ebay so it's probably a bit older.
If you read the link I posted to, the frozr III is exactly what MSI used to demonstrate unlocking and overclocking.
They (MSI) even provide the bios software for you to use.....as always ymmv.
I looked further into this. You are correct, it did not start out this way in the early EF implementations. I stand corrected, but I'd do some searching to see if your three monitors will work well together.
I have seen software conflicts between different brands of monitors come up, but that may also have been worked out.
Here's what widescreengamingforum has to say from their Eyefinity FAQs:
Can I use different monitor sizes?
Yes. However, each monitor in an Eyefinity group must display the same resolution - and they will default to the lowest common denominator. Two displays at 1680x1050 and one display at 1920x1200 will all display a 1680x1050 image - stretching that image across the 1920x1200 display. If you utilize different aspect rations (i.e., 2x 1920x1080 and 1x 1920x1200), the image on the "odd display" will either be letterboxed or stretched.
