Im sorry if this gets posted all the time guys but I havn't kept up with my video cards as I have with other hardware. Just a couple quick answers would be great.

Friends Potential Build:
Antec Nine Hundred
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R LGA 775 Intel P45
CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX 520W
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS30

Video Card?

  • SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $159
  • GIGABYTE GV-R485ZL-512H Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $159.99 ($139 AR)
  • EVGA 512-P3-N975-AR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $129 ($115 AR)

He wants to play most old & new games but just medium settings. Definitely not looking to max everything out. Im trying to keep everything around $600 but the card is not something I want to skimp on. Thanks all!

they say gigabyte 4850 have some noise problems, google for some reviews to make sure
so i'd go with saphire 4850
or u might take a look at the ati4830

and u probably need a procesor :p

the cheapest quad core around should do u fine, if u descided to go dual core then e5200 (since u r on a budget)

Thanks man, Im still not sure what cpu. If I can afford the 4850 ill throw in the saphire one but if not then evga 9800gt

Check the prices on the Geforce 9800GTXs. They can be found quite cheap these days. I actually got a Gigabyte 9800GTX+ 1GB open box from Newegg for $151 after shipping, and the open box item came with all the accessories (although they warn you not to expect them). The 9800GTX+ does a very nice job for the price, depending on the game it usually outperforms the 4850 in most reviews I've read. I mean, if you're going to pay around $150, that extra 5% is an extra 5% no matter how you look at it.

No, I'm not biased, either. My previous card was a Radeon 3870x2. I loved it, but when I can get the same performance and cut about 60W out of my power consumption, there's no arguing.

The 9800GT just wasn't impressive enough to me, and there is a noticeable difference between the GT and the GTX+ at 1440x900 (despite what most people will tell you).
