Which card is better?

I'm considering buying either:
ATI Radeon HD 4870 for around $80
or NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 for about $120
I was wondering which card would be better for the price.
For the price the 9800GX2.
The only thing i was wondering about was game support and such. One of my friends was suggesting that the 9800 would have problems trying to play older games and brand names. I have also heard problems with the dual gpus. I was just looking for insight. Thanks.

The 5770 is similar performance to the 4870. If you can get a 4870 for much less than a 5770, go for the 4870. The 5770 has Dx11 which has barely any advantage in current games and also consumes less power, but if you can get the 4870 that much cheaper, go for it.
I can't speak for whether the 9800GX2 is worth paying extra to get. The performance seems about 50% more than a 4870 in games that scale well from the anandtech review,, haven't looked at any other reviews though. I remember some people complaining that the 9800GX2 didn't feel smooth, but I've never used one so I dont know.
As Tudz pointed out above...I'd be careful about getting a 9800gx2 because of the reported microstutter problems people have complained about. If the 4870 is 1gb I'd go for that at $80...you wouldn't find anything close to that performance for another $40-50 if you're buying something new.
Hey sorry for the late response. I ended up going with MrC4 suggestion and getting the 5770. I was looking at a Tom's Hardware article about the best buys for graphics in august and they suggested the card at 20 more the price. So i figured it was a good deal. I generally stay with Nvidia cards but this just seemed like to sweet a deal for a poor college student.
