Which card for BF2?

The way its meant to be played? Whatever. My bro has a GT and has nothing but texture corruption with bf2. Also, the game insists that he updates his drivers although he has the latest from Nvidia(whql). quote from my bro: "plays like shit on this card. i was at 1024 and was still laggin. lots
of shaders problems and visual errors and just really bad shit. Plus
it kept telling me to update my drivers. WTF!!! "The way it's meant to
be played" I dont think so....

I got the texture corruption as well, untill I upgraded my NV drivers with the ones that came with the demo.... :p The drive included in the dmeo are newer than the ones on NVIDIAS site...

Now there are none...

i'm in the same boat as you my friend
its terrible...a lot of my friend have the same card...all battlefield series lover, all can't play bf2

^^PS1.4 or above REQUIRED. RTFF. :p j/k

Don't troubleshoot it though. I'm kidding in tone not in facts! An Ati 8500 will attempt to run the game, while usually considered inferior, because it can run PS1.4 instructions natively. Heh.... no one really cared about it back then, the slightly better shader model. So don't forget this stuff fans when x shader model doesn't matter because it's all doable some other way or other hooey. So much for also for the "everyone will be on their 10th upgarde when SMX.X is mandatory" claims also, at least as blanket statments.

I believe Far Cry is also a TWIMTBP game and tend to perform a bit better on ATi cards.

That doesnt say much since Crytek is using ATI cards to show off Cry Engine II. Im not sure they liked nVidia much. They also went out of the way to drop in 2.0b shader support in 1.3.

I just played BF2 demo on an X850 XT-PE and a 6800 Ultra. The X850 XT-PE is faster in the BF2 demo.

Please Please Please, pretty please, post roughly what the difference in FPS is between the two - especially what the lowest FPS you've seen with either is.

Could someone tell me what a G70 is?

I like most AGP motherboard owners are now forced to look for a faster video card. Is there much differene between a GeForce 6800 GT vs. Ultra is they are both 256MBB cards?

I figure I'll wait until the game comes out to see how fast it runs on people's systems.

I didn't think my Geforce 6600GT would already be out dated so soon!

That 6600GT should run it just fine. I've got a 6800 OC (very similar speed wise) and am able to run 1280x960 with 4x/4x high quality. I usually hover right around 60 fps.... Unless you're going SLI, upgrading from that 6600 will probably only get you 1 step up the quality/resolution chart... Not really worth the $300 in my opinion. I'd try a higher resolution on mine, but my LCD won't go over 1280x1024

yea but I didnt buy a 6800GT to keep it stock.. :p

I know what you saying about tearking, but i still never use Vsync, i just it off and my display at 100Hz.. or 85Hz depending on resoultion. I hate gamming on pannels, they allways seem to have that shuttering effect, makes me natious. I might be explaing it wrong..but even my newer 8ms viewsonic makes me natious, maybe im doing somethign wrong..

perhaps if you stopped trying to play games on your laptop while spinning around on the carousel it might solve your nausea problems ;)

BF:2 demo runs decent on my system, seems to stay between 60-80 FPS at 1280x1024, 2X AA, all settings maxed except lighting @ medium. Only in very heavy combat situations will it go below 60FPS, usually when there's an artillery strike on a point that's surrounded by troops (which is hella scary).

DFI Lanparty UT 250GB
AMD 3000 (1.8Ghz default, overclocked to 2.4Ghz)
1GB PC3200 OCZ EL Rev2 @ 510Mhz DDR
Evga 6800GT (has Arctic Cooling 5 cooler on it, AS5, overclocked to 416/1100)
WD Raptor 74GB

I think that expecially with this game the size of the memory on the card is a limiting factor. My 6600Gt's (in SLI) outperform most 6800GT's (not in SLI) in most everything. But with this game I'm getting about the same FPS (60-80) with about the same settings.

This game is definately going to be a memory hog, both with video RAM and system RAM. I'm actually thinking about going back to having my textures at medium, as I do get hitches about once every 2-3 minutes where my HD activity light will go nuts for a second, then it's fine. Even my Raptor can't keep up with this game.

Sigh...guess it's time to take the plunge to 2GB. But that's going to wait until I get a S939-based system, and I'm going to wait until Crossfire gets released before I commit to any motherboard (though I do hope to stick with DFI).

Yeh, I don't really get any pauses or area's where my Hard drive goes bonkers. Oh yeah I don't have a Raptor.

I actually did try to run it with 4X AA and everything maxed, but there I was getting hitched about every 45 seconds. It's all just RAM, RAM, and more RAM.

Yah, I have an Asus GF4 Ti4200 that I've been using for years... installed BF2, clicked on game icon, screen flashed black, then back to desktop. WTF?!?! Did a search - minimum FX5700???

I just bought a (not new) 6800GT for $220. Should get it in my hands by the end of the week. Couldn't find any decent deals on latest ATI cards in AGP flavor.

if i wasnt so opposed to paying for a "upgrade" that didnt perform much better id get rid of this 6800 ultra in a heartbeat for an Ati card. Nvidia needs to get its head out of its ass on the 6800 series drivers. I mean they havent been able to fix the texture shimmering in bf42 thats been there since release.

No texture shimmering in BF2 with my 6800GT. I had it in BF1942 with this card, but it appears to be gone in BF2. :)

I run 1280x960 w/4xFSAA and 8xAF, all settings maxed and get very high FPS in the BF2 demo. (I use an Intel 2.4C currently @ 3.4ghz and a PNY Verto 6800 GT).

Also, don't forget that the demo included a set of Nvidia drivers. So there appears to be a little more support thrown to the Nvidia camp with regards to this game.

How do you check your FPS on Battlefield 2 demo?

Pull down the console (~) and type:

renderer.drawfps 1

To turn it off, type:

renderer.drawfps 0

hmmm, my 6800gt ran BFV just fine, I ran that game 1280x960, 8x AF and i never droped below 50fps, and that was online with 45+ palyers.. Also my firends has 2 ultras in SLI, he runs 1600x1200, full AA and AF and it runs higher FPS than I do... Im no saying ATI dose bad, the one ATI rig I have to work with runs good but not as good as all the 6800s around me..

My 6800GT clocks in sig, as well as specs...

Well it is a "GO" and the shuttering you mention was probley because its a laptop screen. (IE flat pannel)

Drivers? I Just said that to watch all the fan boys get there pannies in a bunch...

The "Go" has nothing to do with it, its a 12 pixel/5 vertex card clocked at 450/1.1 Ghz which puts it at 6800 GT levels performance wise. Mine OC's to 520/1.3 Ghz which likely puts it even above stock 6800 Ultra levels (go see reviews for more info.). The Pentium M chip I have is more powerful than the P4 chip in my desktop so there's absolutely no reason it should run like crap compared to my x800 xt pe.. The laptop screen has nothing to do with it, it does this even if I hook it up to my CRT.

I have the bfg 6800gt oc and also the x800pro, I used the 6800gt for doom3, and the x800pro for hl2, have there been any benchmarking done with BF2 to claim the better card yet?

Thats rediculous... why would you buy both cards so that you can have a slight bit performance increase for ONE game? You shouldve just gotten an Ultra or XT PE and been through with it.

My Radeon x800xl runs it fine, the only issue is loading, which goes to crud no matter what resolution if the geometries/textures are on high. It's probably due to my low amount of ram, only 512.

Once it is loaded though, it runs fine, even on highest settings/resolution.

Like someone else said, it's all RAM.

Funny, my laptop's 5,400RPM drive and 512MB run the game fine at 1920x1200x32, try defragging? 2GB will never be needed in this generation of games, I've been there and back on my desktop and can successfully tell you this.

The BF2 dev. team recommended 2GB of RAM for BF2 to maximize playability.

He could have two machines... or maybe borrowing parts from his wife's friend's roommate's uncle's dog?

For BF2 I would stick with Nvidia. The BF2 dev. team stated in the readme, IIRC, that BF2 and ATI cards may have issues with the driver sets Cat 5.5 and 5.6. This has been the case for a few people at the IGN BF2 boards who are still having issues with their ATI cards and the BF2 demo.

Also, don't forget that the demo included a set of Nvidia drivers. So there appears to be a little more support thrown to the Nvidia camp with regards to this game.

How are you getting 8xAF when it isn't even an option? All I see is 4xAA.

Force it on in drivers so it ignores application setting...

And fraps cuts my framerate in half on BF2 as it did on my 9700 in DC Final.

That being said with my 128mb 6600GT I crank everything up at 10x7 2xAA max aniso, except textures at medium and shadows off with the 77.13s and I'm playing at 60fps+ on this rig, with everything at stock ATM cause its frickin' hot in here.

Aren't the go cards supposed to have less onboard memory or something?

I seem to remember most mobile graphics cards having half the memory of their desktop counterparts.

I was forced to uninstall those demo drivers... They cause NUMERous problems with other games, COD tends to nearly freeze when you switch weapons with that damn driver. I hated it, it cut the fps on allm y other games... + my g3 couldnt even loadup to play bf2 lol.

I was able to set it to 4xAA with out to much of a FPS drop. If I switch off application controlled for these settings I wonder if my FPS would go up? Would I also see settings for the AA and AF?

Must be for the n00bs, why would BF2 benefit with over 1GB of ram? Load times? That's pretty much it

A few numbers; http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?...s&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=145&page=1

I dont know how accurate their tests are, but the XL seems faster than the 6800GT with AA/AF. But its a 512 XL vs. a 256 GT. So its not apples to apples. The XT/PE sure seems to be a very fast card it in. I know mine is. :)

Yep just proves what I was saying earlier in this thread, nvidia cards get trashed by ATi in battlefield games. This has always been the case and will likely stay that way. Lately it seems the TWIMTBP logo really means, "buy an ATi card it will run this game faster".
