Which card for 3440x1440?

Hey guys,

I am building an i5-4690k computer. Actually it is built already and stable OC at 4.6Ghz.

I am trying to figure out what card is going to be best for this resolution because it is in between on benchmarks. I am not sure whether I should go for a mid-price card or whether I really need to spend more on a Fury X or 980Ti.

Any suggestions?

There's no such thing as best because what's considered playable/desirable performance is highly subjective and can vary wildly from person to person. My opinion: no, you should not go for a "mid-price" card; look at how intensive recent titles are at 1440p, now imagine having to push 25% more pixels. Get as much GPU power as you can afford.

You spent the money on an expensive high-resolution monitor, now drop the cash on an expensive GPU to drive it. Throw your money at the Fury or Ti :D

At least you only have to push half the pixels of 4k, so it's actually feasible for you to crank up the settings a bit with a single card. But if you like eyecandy you won't be satisfied with a GTX 980/390X.

980 Ti is the minimum I would attempt to run 3440x1440 with. I am actually considering buying a second Titan X.

I'm running 2560 x 1440 and I'm running at SLI 970's. I'd suggest at least a 980 Ti for that res for high quality settings.

I use SLI Titan X's and generally use AA + 1.5x DSR in most games. I am at 3440x1440 60Hz.

A single 980ti you should be able to "max" most modern games with no DSR. You can always add a second one later (or upgrade to Pascal).

With the Fury you don't have the multiGPU option without getting slaughtered by VRAM. Of course we should see some reviews...

At first I used only one Titan X on air as I got my water cooling parts. I almost sold the second I was so happy with one. Kept the second just to do over 4k resolution DSR. If I didn't already have it sitting next to me taunting me I probably would of stayed with one Titan X.

Thanks guys. I guess my lady will have to deal with it, haha! I will see how Fury X vs. 980Ti plays out then make my decision.

Meh, I run 3440x1440 + 1080p on a 7950. Absolutely no problems running games on high quality.

That said, if I were to rebuy a card now, I would get a 390X or 390. I don't like buying top tier cards simply because I feel the performance/cost ratio just isn't high enough

That's true. It goes down the more you spend.

Now I am questioning this again! Because I think the Titan is and always has been a complete waste of money (no offense to anyone who has it, it is like $1300 here in Canada).

The Ti is a better deal comparatively, yes, but what is the real performance bump relative to a 390 for 2x the price? 30 or 40%?

Based on the limited reviews today, the Ti I believe is only a 30% bump? I don't believe the Tis in question though were overclocked which have much more overclocking headroom than AMDs.

I think there are really only two options.

1) 980ti/furyX - $650 - These things are monsters. Really. If everyone's recommendation doesn't prove that, then just look at benches. They provide a ton of power and will max mostly everything.

2) 290x/970 - ~$300 - There is no better value right now. These card provide excellent power per dollar.

I myself had a 980 classy and have a 3440x1440 monitor. I loved it. But it is simply too much $$ per performance. I have sold it and am dropping down to a 970.

The 390x IMO is a joke. It is the same silicon as a 290x. Your better off buying a 290x from someone that has a good OCing one. Additionally, the 8gb is pointless unless you crossfire. Plus at that $400-500 price range, there really is no good alternative unless you go Fury.

A 970/290x will get you playable frame rates at high/ultra quality in most games. If this is ok for you, than grab a 970/290x. If not, then pony up for the 980ti/furyX.

If you need nV features, then 980ti is only "good" buy right now in perf/$.

If you are brand agnostic, wait for reviews on the Fury X. It's hard to overlook the AIO cooling out of the box and warrantied. 980ti won't be able to compete on the temp/noise fronts.

I disagree that a 970 is viable, simply because at this resolution, I think you might hit the 3.5g vram cap sooner than you'd expect on demanding games. So for lower budget choices, a 290x would do. The AIB coolers work great on them.
