dood the 9600 series kinda sucks

ATi tried to make it good by throwing 100 mhz on the xt version

I think i woulda rather seen a 9500XT at 400/350 or something.

ati should gave the 9600xt 256-bit bus but stick with crappy 3.3ns mem. And double the pixel shader processing.

that way it's still pull good in dx8 games but it would totally whip the 9700pro in dx9 games.

Im waiting on one more W2 form and then im ordering that 9700 Pro from newegg and the cooling kit from 2CoolTek.

I was tempted to get a 9800Pro or 9600XT but after seeing how bad they perform compared to the 9700Pro and seeing the 9700Pro is only $200 ;) I think the 9700Pro is the card for me.

true his language was kinda off.. but thats not really true.. the 9800 is not a hell of alot better than the 9700... just a little, because its almost the same card with the almost exact same chips, they just clock higher.

In all the benchmarks and game reviews I have saw the 9800Pro ties or beats the 9700Pro by only a few fps...

Now go look at all the reviews and then tell me which card is better for the money. The 9700Pro is only $200 and it does o/c nice.


PS: Do you really wanna pay $20-120 more just so you have 3fps more in say a game like Halo :p

Check these reviews then tell me the 9700Pro is not a great fukin card for the money.

I have been searching for any info that would make me want the 9800 Pro over the 9700 Pro. Both cards are 8 pipes and 256bit memory controler.. only thing I saw was the 9800 Pro being clocked faster on the core and memory.. not enough for my money IMHO.

But I did find this and I think people should know it ;)


The most significant piece of new technology in the R350, however, is more than a simple performance tweak. One of the NVIDIA GeForce FX's key advantages over the Radeon 9700 is its ability to execute pixel shader programs as long as 1024 instructions. The pixel shaders on the R300 chip are limited to program lengths of 64 instructions, which simply isn't enough to create some of the more compelling shader effects developers might want to use. In order to produce more complex effects, the R300 would have to resort to multi-pass rendering. Multi-pass rendering is nifty because it overcomes a lot of technical limitations, but it's a performance killer because it duplicates lots of work unnecessarily. Essentially, to provide really complex shader effects in real time, you want to avoid making multiple rendering passes, at least in the traditional sense of full passes through the GPU pipeline. The GeForce FX can do so, but the R300 can't.


This little bit here would make me think about spending that little extra to get a 9800 Pro over a 9700 Pro ;)

9700 Pro = two texture units per pass

I found this info on the 9700 Pro and both cards do 1 texture per pipe as far as I can tell.
Still dont explain why the 9700 Pro does so good compared to the 9800 Pro.

Anyone have ideals why the 9700 Pro does well?
