Which C2D?

At this very moment, E6300 would be the choice. Its cheaper yet has a higher fsb, so if your running either of the cpu's at stock speeds (im assuming you will be since you said you dont need anything faster), you will benefit from the 6300's 1066mhz fsb vs. the 4300's 800. The 4300 is alot easier to overclock though, but at this time newegg is pricing way above what its worth so I cannot recommend you get it yet.

im looking for the better overclocker. I have my X2 overclocked, but my motherboard and cpu are limited. Also, Im upgrading my server this summer and im thinking of going with a C2D for my main rig and passing down my AM2 to the server.

Does the higher FSB increase Ocing results?

No, the higher FSB decreases OCing results, because the E4300 has a higher multi. To get to 3.6ghz on the 6300, you need a board capable of about 510FSB (and memory that can do 1020 or use a divider), but to do it on a 4300 you only need a board and memory that can do 400FSB. The 4300 is by far an easier and better OCer, but it's a little bit worse clock-for-clock. Not much worse though, and you can get 3.2 on the stock cooler.

so would my best bet be to do an Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 and eVGA 680i Motherboard Combo? I already have 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDr2800 memory.
and i am looking to overclock. I'll probably use the stock cooler until i can go out and get a cooler such as a Zalman

If your after the best overclocker, the 4300 is the choice. Its lower fsb and higher multiplier make it easier to overclock, but again its priced so lamely high at newegg if I were you I would at least find it at another retailer.

I've always used Newegg. Is ZipZoomFly any good? or Microcenter?

would the eVGA 680i be a good overclocking board or should i go with a different board? if so, which?

zipzoomfly is just as good as good as newegg, though the price there is even higher. I just went and looked around at a bunch of stores, everybody is offering what newegg is or higher. It will come down, but your going to find that most places will still be offering that wonderful new product mark-up

well im in no hurry to get this. I can wait a bit for the price to come down.

any comments on another motherboard to consider over the eVGA 680i?

For starters go check out the Intel motherboard forum and Hardocp's review database, you can find many suggestions there. I personally am using a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 and love it.

I think i've decided on the eVGA 680i SLI motherboard. Now i just gotta wait for either a 8800GTS or 8600 Ultra.

Tigerdirect has a OEM 4300 for $175, but you said you'll run it on the stock cooler, so...

But since you also said that you don't mind waiting, I'd suggest waiting.

It has been one of the best motherboards ive ever owned. There are a few people who have had a terrible time with them, but most of the bugs have been worked out in the latest bios and it loves to overclock.

if you want to overclock, then i suggest using an aftermarket cooler, place that into your calculations. no to mention arctic silver compound. the stock coolers are ok (but to be honest u need something with better heat dissapation to OC), personally i would use the zalman 9500led (cause its not too heavy for pure copper.) tho plenty here will guide u right. also decent airflow, the new ds3p mobos from gigabyte are very good too. i also thought of the 4300, but for me i am going 63 or 6400, as a 3Ghz oc will do for me. heck even at stock it kicks my cpus ass and even amds cpus. just my 2cents worth. also may i suggest selling the am2 rig and getting a second c2d for your server, my reason simple, the c2d is very cool and steps down wehn the loads not needed, so an c2d 4300 stock with power saving on. and at night or wehn not in use she will throttle down and save you on power. as i suspect your family prob barely stress the current rig anyway..

sorry to double post, but so i don't want to restart a new topic and this kinda relates to the original topic, which motherboard should I get?

Choice A
~or~
Choice B

Also, i was thinking this over today and I think i'm gonna go with a E6400 instead.
And last but not least, i am leaning towards this cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118019

The Zalman is a great selection, as is the 6400, its a nice cpu. The motherboards, well, its subjective but I think I would go with the Asus board if I had the choice again although the evga overclocks well.

well there have been so many reported problems with the eVGA board. I like them both and have heard great things from both. It's really a hard decision. I kinda wanna lean toward the ASUS board because i have used them before and they are a good company that makes great products. And evga doesn't really seem to have too much experience with boards. They only had those two boards on Socket 939.

Let me make this more simple.

Which is the most stable of the two?

Well, if you can wait a little, I get my 680i at the end of the month and can tell you. Just PM me then.

ok
i will take that into consideration
thanks alot

your welcome, on a side note i am gonna get a 4300 for my server (when they come here to australia). heck my current pc i run 2 virtual servers and play games (ut2k4 invasion, bf2 etc) and i dont notice much fps drop, tho load times are a bit longer. what i say to people who ask me about the cpu fan noise. " Oh thats my test going on. " they "What test?" me " i am testing a new high speed turbo prop its half the power and twice the noise. who needs to hear stuff" hehehe
