I have put some serious thought to buy a laptop for college for this fall. Unfortunatly like any other computer decisions, there are way too many manufacturers to choose from. I have been considering Vaio / Alienware (overpriced shit I know). :( Are there any manufacturers out there that you guys suggest for me to purchase from? A company where you can configure your system that is. Not those POS where you have to go with a set thing. ty for the replies. :)

I have looked at the IBM laptops and saw that there is an integrated fingerprint reader. Does anybody own a IBM laptop who has this that actually does not have trouble with it? Because if there isnt trouble with it and if it is the best laptop around, why bother looking anywhere else?

I hear laptops get stolen alot in colleges. Why dont manufacturers make built in padlocks into the monitor so you cant open it w/o the combo. ...but anyway back on topic....so IBM?...thoughts anyone?

IBMs are good, solid notebooks. They're also very expensive for the specs that you get with them, but you're also paying for all that IBM-tech stuff and the magnesium zinc body. This pertains most to the T series. No clue about their cheaper R series.

Lenovo (new owner of IBM's computer division) is introducing a tablet Thinkpad X, would be nice to have, I might look into getting one next year.

As for me, I'd probably recommend getting an Asus notebook, maybe from www.discountlaptops.com. I have an M6Ne and love it.

I just headed over to the Dell online shop and customized a notebook for approx $3,000 some odd dollars. And I found a 35% discount coupon for dell notebooks from the Inspiron thread... That coupon would cut the price of a $3000 laptop to $2100...now THAT is hella tempting  . I have heard some horror stories about Dell customer support though. Anybody else?

Dell < *

I found myself jumping between the Asus Z70V and the IBM T43(p). If you look at both of them, you'll be cursed just like me :)
