so i need to get a blackberry for work and i have no idea which one to get. i've never had a smartphone before, but i see myself using it heavily, browsing the web and answering emails for work. cost really isn't an issue, my company pays for everything and if i get the pearl its free (any other phone i pay a small percentage). so anyone want to give me a rundown of what to look for and which one i should go with?

Not sure if I can link to another forum but, blackberryforums.com has excellent feedback on all the models.

I personally have the 8830 global phone and it's awesome. I can send/receive email, browse the internet, weather, free 411, spell check etc. I've heard a lot of good things about the curve. I'm not too familiar with it because Verizon doesn't carry it.

Call quality is excellent on my 8830 too, the main thing that bugs most users is the WIMPY vibrate and speaker when you get an incoming call. Other than that, flawless.

this kind of thing you may want to talk with your IS dept. i'm presuming two things:

1) you have a BES server and
2) others in your company have a berry

what's available will be limited to the carrier. since you mention the pearl, i'm guessing you have accounts though att (though maybe tmobile). att has just about the widest berry selection, so that doesn't help you (though choice is good!)

if you aren't used to qwerty, then the pearl may be a good choice. not everyone is happy going from qwerty to suretype (t9 - suretype is a bit lateral). the difference between the curve and the 8800 are going to be minimal with the big exceptions (curve has camera, 8800 has gps).

your is staff can give you a reasonable amount of feedback from what others have problems with or complain about. bottom line is you need to go to play with these things to see if the pearl screen is big enough for you to browse, if you are ok with suretype, or if the curve is too big, etc, etc.

I'd say get the pearl. it's an awesome phone, and when you get it for free its just that much better. I surf all the time with it, call quality is excellent. the only complaint (as mentioned above about another BB) is the wimpy vibrate.

we do have a bes server and most people in the company do carry a berry. however, we can choose among the major carriers so that's another thing i am undecided about. like i said i've never had a smartphone, but considering how many emails i may need to answer a day and the fact that i am just used to typing on a keyboard i would say qwerty is a must for me.

If you've got an existing carrier, that will probably decide things for you right there.

The BlackBerry Curve is great if you want a 'real' full-keyboard BlackBerry but with more obvious media functions (namely, the camera) or you're already with AT&T.

The 8800 is largely the same thing minus the camera and a different keyboard; also for AT&T.

If you're with Sprint or Verizon or simply want their plans, you'll want the 8830. I would most likely choose Sprint if just because its unlimited data really *is* unlimited (as opposed to Verizon's invisible ~5GB cap).

Do you have to pay the monthly fee for the carrier?

I suppose either way, I'd say go with a Sprint SERO plan for the unlimited data, roaming, and pcs-pcs along with N&W@7 all on top of being very inexpensive (starts at 30/mo for 500min).

While the SERO plan is good, it would still require you to pony up extra money for the blackberry plan. While free internet is included in the plan, blackberry plansare NOT included in the SERO plan due to blackberries require their own server. I found this out the hard way.
