ok, i know my cpu is holding back my vid card a good bit, but is it a lot?? would getting an amd barton processor fix the bottleneck and some new faster ram? if so is the 2500+ gonna do the trick because that seems to be the cheapest one

edit: i get about 45fps in ut2k4 1024x768 4xaa and 4x af on the assault map with about 20 people

ABIT NF7-S Rev 2.0
Barton 2500+ MOBILE
SLK-900 series (947, etc) for socket A
A Vantec Tornado
and ram, if ya like

I know of one guy personally with that rig, and he hit 2.6+ Ghz on AIR :D

Faster ram plus the extra cache from the Barton 2500+ should help you. Do you just want faster gaming?
 
If your MB will run 400fsb stable and you're going to get some pc3200 to go along with the Barton, then, sure. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
 
yeah my mobo is a 400mhz and i would get the faster ram to go along, i'm just wondering it would be worth my while to do it, i don't care about 3 or 4 fps at the same resolutions, i want a good increase.

edit: my current processor is palomino core
 
The jump from an 1800+ with 512 PC2100 to a 2500+ running at 3200+ with 1 GB PC3200 was enormous for me, but I never got around to OCing the 1800+.

With Barton prices so low, it really can't hurt as far as a "buy you some time" upgrade. A 3200+ Barton and some PC3200 should last you long enough for 64bit apps to mature and 64bit hardware to decrease in price. Should also give you time to wait for a compelling reason to do an MB upgrade. You're talking about $75 for the cpu and about $80 for 512MB PC3200 memory to have a near top of the line machine.
 
No. If you're not going to OC, don't bother with a modile barton; save some money and buy the desktop one.

You can still OC a desktop barton quite a bit. The mobile is just an overclocker's preference right now.

And voltage. The stock voltage of a mobile Barton is way lower than the desktop version, and (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe they can take about as much voltage as the desktop processors can, but can do higher speeds at the same voltage as a non-mobile Barton.

Plus, even if you don't OC, running at a lower voltage = Lower temps, and we all know that's good. :p
 
I just got one, even though newegg jacked the price up big time ($100). Figure I'd replace my 1800+ with that and replace my Ath 1Ghz in my A7N266-VM with the 1800.

I have the 1800+ in my Gigabyte GA-7VA using PC3200 (cas 2.5) running at 266 bus/400ram. Once I get my MAthlonXP 2500+ should I set it to 333 bus/333ram, then start OCing both 1:1?

I personally haven't tried to OC my 1800+ because I just switched to PC3200 from cheap PC2100 and that crap didn't OC at all.
 
just saying because you could have gotten a lot more answers because most people that know AMD are under strictly amd.
