I have a Pentium D 805 box that I'm swapping cases on for the sole purpose of 1080p playback.

Which LP card is up to the task? Lots of reviews that seem to knock every card out there.

Trying to keep the price <$50.

5550 is probably your best choice. 5570 is a better deal for the money. A 5450 is probably up to the task since you won't be doing deinterlaced content, only pulls 15w at full load and can be found for under $25 after MIR, but its definitely at the weak end if you try to do anything more intensive. I'd take the 5550 @ $50 over the 5450 @ $25 (400 shaders vs 80)

Thanks. 512MB would be fine for a 42" yeah?

I have a 4670 that's more than plenty right now, but I'm trying to go with a small case for the bedroom.

I'm using a 5450 to play MKVs and BluRay content at 1080p on a 47" TV just fine.

Yeah, I'm not finding any 5550's anywhere.
I guess they got discontinued since the price delta with the 5570 and 5450 wasn't big enough anymore

$55 after MIR but has display port, not HDMI built in (could probably use DVI->HDMI adaptor and still get audio out) The version with HDMI is 65 after MIR. At that price the 5670 is a serious option, but beware that its a dual-slot cooler.

5450:

note: reviews seem to be for a 6950 or something... this thing will NOT "chew up Metro 2033" as the first comment claims ;)
Not recommending the Asus 5450 (the cheapest one) because it has a dual-slot low-profile bracket instead of 2 low profile ones so including the VGA is optional. I actually own one of these as a diagnostic card and it'll do 1080p playback just fine

I think the 5450 is really all you need

Just realized it doesn't have native HDMI. Do the 5 series cards pass audio with the DVI>HDMI adapter like the older ATI cards?

my hd 4870 does audio over hdmi, but you have to use the amd dvi > hdmi adapter.

I put a HIS 5570 into a friends build and it sends audio to a TV from the start. Chances are that the Sapphire one does too. It looks the same so I assume it's a ref card.
