I want to push an e6420 to 3.5ghz....

Need a cooler. There's a sale going on and I have these options:

Thermalright U-120E Ultra-120 eXtreme $48.42
Thermalright Ultra -120A $40.99
Tuniq Tower 120 - $55.99 /B]
Scythe NINJA PLUS Rev.B 6Heat Pipes CPU Cooler $33.99
Scythe INFINITY 5Heat Pipes CPU Cooler $39.99

All prices in CAD. Apparently there's a $8 MIR promotion for all Scythe coolers too so make it $25.99 for the NINJA and $31.99 for the INFINITY. I was thinking of TR U-120E or the Scythe INFINITY. I have a few 120x38 Panaflo M1A 120mm 61CFM/30dBA fans and a fan controller sitting here so I can definitely add some additional air cooling.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: PRICES UPDATED! TUNIQ AVAILABLE.

I think the Thermalright ultra 120 extreme is the best but I am biased because I own one.

I have a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme also... only thing I can tell you is to make sure its flat. A lot of them are not and need to be lapped including my own. I dropped about 8C under load going to this heatsink over my Zalman 9700.... idle temps were about the same but the load temps were way different.

I LIED. :(

ORIGINAL POST UPDATED!!

TUNIQ IS NOW AVAILABLE.....

ULTRA-120 EX vs TUNIQ 120.....
$48.42 vs $55.99.....

what to do, what to do......

If I mount 2 x Panaflo M1As onto the Ultra-120, will it kill the Tuniq 120?

Ultra 120 Extreme is better then the tuniq. Just stick a 1,200 or 1,600 rpm S-flex on there and let the mother board slow the fan speed down. It will be quiet and work out very well.

Already got a couple of Panaflo M1As....they are the big ones though, 120x38mm...do you think 2 would fit in in a P35 board / Antec P182 case?

Anything is possible! Which P35 board? Looking at my board I think I could probably fit them if it wasnt for my memory cooler.

If you can find the Ultima90 for around the same price or cheaper than the Tuniq, I'd go for that instead. It performs as good as my Tuniq but its much smaller/lighter... its also easier to install.

I'm not sure the fan clips can accomodate a 38mm wide fan on the Thermalrights. The Tuniq won't fit one for sure, only 25mm.

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the following without compatibility issues?

-Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
-TR Ultra-120 Extreme w/ at least one 120x38mm fan pushing air->TRUE->exhaust fan
-TR HR-05 IFX/SLI (w/ small 80x25 or 80x15mm fan) on the NORTHBRIDGE
-8800GTS video card with nothing on the back (shouldn't conflict with the NB)
-Antec P182B case (should have a lot of room)

Can anyone confirm that all 3 parts (HSF, NB HSF, video card) can co-exist on the motherboard without any conflicts?

added pics I found on the web:

i'm using same mobo in that pic, same HSF, question is will the HR-05 IFX/SLI fit in between the CPU HSF and video card?

I'm about to hit the order button!

Thats a tight fit.

If my Ultima90 w/92mm hydrowave can take my E6750 to 3.8Ghz, I'm pretty sure it can take your E6420 to 3.6Ghz -- if you wanted a bit more breathing room in your setup.

E6750 @ 3.8Ghz 1.55v: 28°C idle, 52°C load, 22°C ambient

The fan cilps that come with the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme are for the 25mm thickness fans. Im sure you can get the thicker fans on there with some work or just spring for an S-flex "E" or "F" version.

But I can fit all 3 right?

Should I get the HR-05 IFX/SLI instead of the normal HR-05 IFX?

The standard HR-05 IFX won't fit with the Ultra120x, you'll need the SLI model.

ok thanks, just ordered everything....it really looks doubtful in the pics i posted above but i'll take your word

As I mentioned above, I don't think the TR Ultra120x fan clips will fit your Panaflo 38mm fans, and Copyright confirmed this. So, I think thats your biggest challenge.

I emailed TR about that and they told me:

"If you look at our web site you'll see that the fan wires grab on to the bottom flange of the fan, thus the thickness has no bearing, unless your fan doesn't have a top and bottom flange (tube from top to bottom) if that's the case you are out of luck."

I don't have any clue what that means but I take it's a yes :p? I'm using a TR SI-120 right now and they seem to take 38mm thick fans - I don't see why TR would decrease compatibility (personal observation, not sure if this is relevant ).

Anyways I'll be ordering a S-Flex "E" just incase my 38mm Panaflos don't work. If they do, then I'll put the S-Flex "E" as a front fan for my P182. Actually I might even order 2-3 and run them @ 5v....my P182 is LOUD and my Panaflos might be dying :confused:

It means you need OPEN CORNERS on your fans. If there's a cylinder connecting the two fan holes on each side of the fan, then those are CLOSED corners and won't work. I believe Panaflo fans come in both flavors, so I can't tell which ones you have without seeing them. You can inspect this yourself, though. ;)

Makes sense. Did a google search:

CLOSED:

OPEN:

My Panaflos are OPEN

ahh they are right.. I just noticed it grabs the inner part of the fan so thickness doesnt matter.. my bad. Also it doesnt matter if its a closed in fan as there are how do mods on making them open.

All you need is a dremel ;)

Guys I have a problem. I made over $300 of orders on that site but realized they won't have the TR HR-05 IFX/SLI until 2-3 weeks.. I don't know of any other places that carry it (in Canada at a reasonable price). So right now my entire order is on stall while they wait for me to make up my mind.

Since you guys said I MUST use the SLI version, and none of it's in stock...

What if I downgrade my TRUE120 to a Ultima-90 instead?

Will that give me enough clearance to use the regular HR-05IFX (non-SLI) on the NB??? I wouldn't mind downgrading to the U90 cooler as it's $11 cheaper and performs almost the same as the TRUE120.

Please guys, let me know, the store is waiting for my answer :eek::eek:

And here's another pic of my board, a TR U-120 EXTREME, and the clearance area near the NB..

I believe jab-tech.com ships to canada.

i'd rather not order from jabtech and pay $18 shipping + customs/duties just for one HR-05 ..i remember asking them to mail cross-border using USPS airmail (without tracking) and they were strongly against that....

Will the Ultima-90 solve my problem?

You're not going to see a huge difference in temps between any of these coolers, really. Some are better than others, but we're talking about amounts that don't add up to much. You might get an extra 100mhz out of using the most expensive, effective cooler on your list over the cheapest which I believe is the Ninja. So ask yourself if that 100mhz is worth the price premium.

Really, 3.5ghz is great but if you have to settle for 3.2 you won't really notice a difference. And you likely will not have to settle, since any one of the coolers you listed, including the Ninja, are effective enough to get you there. If you can't hit 3.5ghz with one of those coolers, chances are it's the chip and not the cooling that's holding you back.

One of the benefits of the Ninja design is you get the great performance without needing to run a turbine fan to get it. Just a slow spinning 120mm fan will do the trick. The closer fins and more restrictive design of most other heatsinks will require more CFM and most likely more noise. I don't know if that's important to you or not, but it's worth noting anyway.

Ive already decided on the U90 or U120.....what I need to know now is whether the HR05 IFX can fit on the U90 or U120 :confused:

U120 + HR05 IFX work fine together on a DS3

weird.....TR support + another forum user told me that if the U120 is facing the exhaust fan, a HR05-IFX won't fit (unless it's the SLI version which I cannot get).....

That's why I want to know if the U90 (facing exhaust) will work.......
