I'm in the market for a new gpu but don't know which one to get. Any suggestions? I was like at an evga 970 but then there's the ftw and ftw+ and ssc. haha Just want the better one, geez.

Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming edition...great temps, cooling, performance...beware that the card is extra long so make sure it'll fit in your case

The EVGA lineup has been of of the worst for 970s. Anything between MSI/Gigabye/Asus are good cards depending on if you are going for maximum overclocking or a smaller more efficient card.

Yall wouldn't recommend any evga cards for 900s? o_O

Because EVGA released a wide selection of 970s with low quality coolers, poor power delivery, higher tendency towards coil whine, and the cards were not priced well. You need to go up three or four tiers of EVGA cards (and spend more money) just to get features you can find on the one and only 970 sold by Asus for $340. Also EVGA shipped a bunch of cards without back plates or zero DB fans (problems they later fixed for some cards) which didn't do them any favors on launch.

If you want to go for huge overclocks and get the best cooler, the Gigabyte Gaming G1 970 has been the best 970 since launch day. At this point the only reason to buy a EVGA card is pretty much because you decided you were only going to buy a EVGA card.

Ah I see, :). Well, I like Evga but not against asus, may check out the asus then. Thanks!

id wait for the new amd r9 300's to come out unoffical benchmarks claim that the 300 pwns the 980 and the 970 isnt even close LULZ

970's dont use all 4 gogs did you ppl forget that allready?

Just heard that it was due to that specific app. On more intense applications, it used more than 3.5, could be wrong tho.

too bad MSI decided not to release a Lightning version of the 970...I'm sure that would have been the hands down best version

Waiting is always an option, but the R9-3xx that will as you say "pwn" the 980 and 970 will probably be priced accordingly. Also no official set date for release that I've seen. I'm kind of surprised to see no one suggesting him to pick up a 290(x).....

If I was buying a 970 now, I would either grab up the Gigabyte G1 or one of the Asus Strix cards.

grab a good priced 290x

(sorry, i had to do it)

That's ok. #4GBMeans4GB
On a side note i don't know why [H] is so scared to touch/talk about this.
Back 10Yrs ago they would've had an article by now.we used to could trust these guys. now im not so sure.:(

I would opt for 290x if I was judging it purely from raw power, however for all what it is worth, I have noticed that games are favor AMD tend only to suffer FPS drops on nVidia, but still remaining playable at similar settings, but I know a few games that favor nVidia (due to their gameworks) is somewhat gimped on 290x, however those instances are rare.

The specific case that I know of that happens is (you can sue me for this) AC:U, for what it is worth.

If this kind of thing does not bother you, I'd opt for 290x at this stage, given how nVidia have handled this whole affair, if principle is important for you. But, 290x is a year old tech at this stage, and is only starting to play catch up on some of the techs that nVidia has on offer, if you can wait, I would definitely try holding out for 300 series, but again, we have NO idea when that will come, maybe in the next 1~2, or after 1~2 seasons. If the leaked benchmarks are any accurate indication of 300 series capability, it'll be VERY interesting.

In the form of an article? HardOCP does reviews, not investigative journalism.

They have done both honestly. Over the 12 years (Ive been lurking) I have been here I have seen articles that bust companies for lying. Articles that had them digging deep into the subject to find out what was going on. At this point I have come to accept that most websites do not want to talk about this issue. Its really frustrating but meh.

All right, link one.

The problem here is that you and some others want sites to go digging too deep in an issue that is fairly clear. All some additional frame time graphs are going to do is confirm what other sites already discovered. The [H] reviews have been pretty clear that the 980 was a better card for higher resolutions.

How about I link a bunch so you don't bother me with this again?

Yes the problem here is that users want an article that investigates a problem. Sorry that people would like to see confirmed results of this issue and it brought to light in full. I am sorry that some people are upset that a company lied and misled them about their GPU purchase. I am so sorry man I do not know what I am thinking by wanting consequences for bad actions.

I would take a look at the ASUS GTX 970 STRIX DirectCU II. It is a fantastic card. It overclock like a champ. I'm running it core at 1400 MHz and memory at 7802 MHz with no issues and I know I can go further. Very quiet card as well and no coil whine like many of the EVGAs. Hard OCP did review

I second FlipCodys suggestion but I would like to add that the Gigabyte Windforce versions are getting great reviews, as well as the MSi models. If I were you I would stick within those three brands.

Don't be so quick to dismiss EVGA. I had two previous 970 cards (SC and FTW) and had zero issues with either of them, including coil whine.

The new SSC and FTW+ pretty much match what the competition offers and between the two the SSC would be the one to go with.

The whole 970 debacle gives interesting insight into the excellent customer service that the major companies provide. With my local retailer, Asus and EVGA cards can be refunded at original sales price whereas MSI requires the card to be sent in. If you have a Gigabyte it seems your SOL.

I returned my 970s and went with EVGA 980s and again no coil whine.

Get the Gigabyte 970 if you're going for maximum OC
Get the MSI if the Gigabyte doesn't fit your case and you prefer a bit more silence (fans off @ idle)
Get the Asus if you like Asus and prefer silence and willing to give up some OC headroom
Get the EVGA card only if you're 100% hooked to their CS

Or better yet, buy an open box/returned 970 for cheap.

i got this EVGA 04G-P4-3975-KR GeForce GTX 970
this is just my first 10-hour stability check after upgrading my PSU, i think there's still more on the table......and no coil whine
this model has a Memory MOSFET Cooling Plate on it as well, unlike the earlier models, and has fixed the cooling problems that the earlier ones had (heat pipes not fully contacting GPU core)....i'd say it's doing pretty well, running 1514Mhz boost at only 55°C and the fan only turning at 45%
