I've narrowed down my gpu upgrade to a 5770 for the machine in my sig as the 4850 is suffering from a lot of crashing/corruptions/etc which I think is due to overheating. Which 5770 would you guys recommend from newegg for its capability to stay cool and run quiet? My 4850 is too loud even at 50% and we all know how hot they run. It will be used at stock speeds at 1680 1050 resolution.

The new eggshell design is supposedly quieter and cooler if you have a case with good airflow, then its up to the warranty that you want. XFX has the best warranty but you would be fine with any of the rest of them. I believe the powercolor is selling for like $159, check the HIS as well it might have a coupon for $10 last time I checked.

i picked up the sapphire vapor-x version from amazon 175$ shipped , its a bit more on newegg with tax for me (CA).

im currently getting mid 30s idle and 45C on load (overclocked to 975/1350)

i have an xfx 5770, reference design not the eggshell. personally, i think the eggshells are ugly.

went with xfx because of the lifetime manufacturer's warranty. no other company offers this.

im using a sapphire rev 2.0. currently idling at 28c and the highest temp ive seen so far is 67c.

5770 is 160 at the egg. For $100 more you can get a 5850 from Dell and have 3x the card.

I am running a new PowerColor 5770, it is factory overclocked by 25mhz from the reference board. The cooler that it comes with is very very quiet, which is extremely important to me, and I have a GPU core temperature of only 59 (typical) to 63 (max) degrees celsius under 100% GPU load. I have heard that both ATI reference coolers run a bit hot and are quite loud.

holy crap!

after 5 minutes of furmark running fullscreen at 1280x1024 (no MSAA) i'm topping out at 82C. i have the reference design board. my fan is definitely loud when it ramps up to full speed, and i hear it over my case fans, but i'm a very mild gamer. (which is why i only have a 5770, heh.)

is that egg cooler really that much better? 20 degrees is huge. although, i'm not taking into account the potential for different ambient temps either.

3 times faster? um the 5850 isnt even close to twice as fast as the 5770 so you may want to re check your facts. heck its actually only around 50% faster on average so calling it 3x faster is a rather silly exaggeration.

EDIT:just so this doesnt turn into a debate about how much faster the 5850 is than the 5770 here is a review. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3658&p=1

5850 is about 50% faster than 5770 in Crysis
5850 is about 40% faster than 5770 in Far Cry 2
5850 is about 60%-70% faster than 5770 in Battleforge
5850 is about 30%-40% faster than 5770 in HAWX
5850 is about 55% faster than 5770 in Dawn of War 2
5850 is about 40%-50% faster than 5770 in RE 5
5850 is about 45%-55% faster than 5770 in Batman
5850 is about 40%-55% faster than 5770 in L4D

Yes.
I'm running Crossfire Asus 5770 with V2 coolers (Egg).
I just ran the same Furmark test, they reached both 84C with no extra fan noise from idle, sat 2 metres away in a silent room.

what % is your fan running at?

when OC'ing with afterburner on auto my vapor-x 5770 is @ 40% fan speed @ 50C. but when i force 60% fan speed it drops to 40C

Spend a lot fo time looking at it, eh?

The egg coolers are pretty ugly, but they cool much better and are quieter.

The reference HSF design actually has a vapor plate built-in.. it's just that AMD engineers goofed up so bad that the contact point for the GPU is a millimeter or more between the two surfaces. This means that the TIM is much less efficacious than it should be because there's globs of it to compensate for the poor default contact. Unfortunately this problem is isolated to the 5770 reference.. the 5850s and 5870s do not suffer from this problem.

If I had to get a 5770 again, I'd have to get the Vapor-X. Way beyond the egg and reference in terms of cooling performance and low noise IMO.

The sapphire vapor-x 5770 is at the top of my list but the bios fix possibility is a little concerning. Anyone order within the past couple days from newegg and get one with the correct bios?

mines from amazon needed bios flashing, but to be honest its pretty simple. just follow the steps on the powerpoint slide on the sapphire site.

I'm running the egg-shell ones in two separate systems, and while I wholeheartedly agree about them being ugly, they are VERY cool, and quiet. I don't know how they compare to the other cooler temp-wise, but I think they might be just a touch quieter. As to the OP, XFX either version if you ask me.

i'm starting to regret getting a rev1 cooler. :/

could there possibly be something wrong with my card? or does the temp i posted earlier sound about right? i'm not super worried because, as i mentioned, i'm not a heavy gamer, but still if my temps are high i need to do something about it. i was more interested in the 5770 for its htpc possibilities as far as hdmi out and hd audio bitstreaming. going to be using my machine for double duty as a desktop and htpc.

@otapnam: not sure what % my fan was running at when i ran that furmark test. i'll have to re-run it and get back to you.

@tomgreen: yeah yeah, i know. i never see it, and i'm not a fan of case windows, so i won't be seeing it in the future either. guess i'm just a sucker for flashy plastic!

sorry for the double post but i missed this on my first pass through the thread. my single 5770 definitely gets LOUD at 82C.

one thing i just thought of. i do have a side intake ducted almost right into the gpu, not touching it but pretty close. i wonder if this is causing the gpu fan to turn faster than it's meant to.

didn't even want to duct the fan, but i was getting a vibration and all i had laying around was an old fan, so i punched out the hub and blades and am using the fan casing as a spacer for now until i can get a gasket or some rubber grommets.

Read the above Anand link.
doh, i did zip through it, but a little too quickly i guess. guess 82C is perfectly normal. i'll give myself a few minutes in the corner with the dunce hat on.

As long as the ducted air isnt restricting airflow, it probably wont have a negative affect, even if the fan spins faster.
Fan noise is mostly caused by turbulence at the edges of the fan blades as the air is accelerated.
Higher positive air speed incoming will require less acceleration (as long as it isnt spinning the wrong direction) so should produce less noise.
However the ducting may be allowing fan noise, that was being stopped by your case, to have a more direct route out of the case.

Heh, not to worry, its easy to do when in a flap.

i'll have to take a look at the gpu fan with the case open and the system on. not exactly sure what direction the fan is spinning.

i'm ordering a gasket for the side intake. we'll see if that makes any difference as well. i suspect it's not an issue, though. it's just that the reference cooler likes to make itself be heard.

I wouldn't be worried, my 5770 v1 screamed as well during and after load. Seems normal.

So how about if you watercool the 5770? Either a GPU-only block or a full-cover block from someone like EK?

Thanks,

Just thought I'd chip in. I have a standard 5770 with the new egg cooler. I added some copper ramsinks to my card that required the removal of the HSF. I then replaced it with a very very thin layer of AS5 and after 3 mins of Furmark it tops out at 71c and stays at 71c till I switched it off after 10 mins. Thats at 40% fan max.

Usually hits 55c in games.

Watercooling the 5770 would probably produce magnificent results, with passive heatsinks on the memory and sufficient cooling for the VRMs (either by heatsinks or active).

I think a full cover block is the only way to go.....to me it just makes more sense than putting sinks on the VRM and memory and trying to be sure they are cool enough.
I have a full cover block on my 5870 and the whole card stays nice and cool under load..:)

I've bought the 5770 vapor-x and am pretty happy with it's performance. currently overclocked with msi afterburner on max settings (using afterburner because of it's customizable fan controls). ran furmark for an hour and never got above 61C at 90% fan speed, even at 90% speed it's only slightly louder than my med-speed case fans (noctua's nf-p12s, case has decent air-flow but exhaust is hindered by a radiator and small vent holes). I'd recommend it if you didn't want to replace the heatsink or go with XFX's v2 cooler model for the life-time warranty.

Bah, I ordered theold cooler because I plan on putting an aftermarket cooler on it anyway. Saved a few dollars on shipping and price getting the old one.
