Well, it's about to be my birthday, my grandmother wants to give me a gift, so I figured that since I'm overdue for a mouse upgrade (using a heavily modded version of the old Intellimouse) why not make a mouse one of the things that she gets me. The question is, which one would be best overall? I don't want wireless (I have no trouble with the wire as I've worked out a sort of trick to keep it from getting in the way) so that opens up a larger range of cards in the price area. Right now I'm thinking most about the Logitech MX500 as it has the extra buttons and all. However, Microsoft's newer Intellimouse has that scroll button that has an extra horizontal axis to some small degree. I do prefer the USB connection as it tends to run smoother than PS/2 (not a big issue really, I don't think they make any that are exclusively PS/2 anymore, I just wanted to go ahead and say this is all.) Currently I'm considering the MX310 or MX500 by Logitech and the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer v4.0. Other suggestions are welcome though. Probably tomorrow I'll drop by Best Buy and at least get a feel for them, but you can't really try the mouse in a real environment where things like resolution (preciciency) and etc actually show up. This is why I'm asking here as many of you have more direct experience with these. (Though normally wireless, each wireless has a wired counterpart normally anyway.)

BTW, off subject, but, is there a good AFFORDABLE wireless trackball type mouse that has the ball where you use your index finger (NOT your thumb)? My grandmother has decided that she feels "tied down" by the wires and has absolutely loved the wireless keyboard I gave her. Most wireless mice are the kind you move around. I know this is silly, but this is just how she feels about it for whatever reason. (She has to hide her pc by putting it in a cabinet and shutting the doors even. Definitely a weird person.)

why not just ask for a giftcard, then put in some more of your own money and get a logitech mx510? I love the mx500,510,700. They all fit like a glove and cant imagine not using one
 
Well, she will give me up to 50, I just wanted some money for something else. If the 510 is really THAT much better than the 500 I'm willing to consider it. The thing is, is it really that much better? They seemed realitively similar and I didn't see why the 510 was worth so much more. I note that the three you said you loved included the 500.

I'm still wondering. Is that newer IntelliMouse Explorer worth bothering with? I'm not sure right off hand just to what extent I could really use it for. This is primarily for gaming, though I must admit I'm rather addicted to the side back and forward buttons. I use them in Opera even though it's every bit as easy to use the hold right hit left or hold left hit right to the same effect and actually a little easier since it requires less actual hand movement. (Silly, I know.) Anyone tried both by any chance? I notice that it looks like they've designed this one much better to fit your hand so that hopefully it should be better for gaming. I'm thinking maybe the extra axis might be ok for prev/next weapon type controls (I always HATED using the wheel for that. Too easy to bump it. Then again, I might have the same issue with the new axis... Usually I prefer manual control so it never switches at an inopportune moment.)

I have a Logitech Internet Navigator keyboard. Why the crap would I want a new keyboard while this works flawlessly? (I hate "natural" keyboards.) Besides, I'm looking for the higher quality type of mouse you get when you buy it seperately from a keyboard. After all, they don't cost LESS just because you buy a keyboard with them.. So you get a lower quality mouse in those combos. Probably that is the old version 1 intellimouse, which I already have.

And oh god the way those ms keyboards that have the function keys default to off... GOD that sucks. I get sick of turning the function lock back on every fricking time I reboot or something causes the USB to reset or if someone in another room sneezes... The logitech at least remembers where you left it, even if it does go back off if you cut power to the powersupply or unplug.

EDIT: Well, the only MS keyboards I find in that range definitely have an even cheaper mouse than what I already have. No thanks. Logitech offers similar deals, but, still a worse mouse than what I have. This thing technically works fine it's just that no matter how much I mod it, without being able to reform the plastic itself, I can never make it fit better. Plus, that Logitech said 800 DPI and I'm pretty sure the standard optical mouse is 400 (though I am not really completly sure I admit.)

BTW, just why in the heck hasn't MS fixed this yet? EVERYONE complains about that amazingly idiotic F-lock thing... Yet, they just keep making them like that... I mean, is it that hard to just reverse the functionality so you have to hit f-lock to get to the crap no one ever uses? Probably just reverse one bit somewhere....
 
difference between the 510 and 500 is the look and the optical. The 510 is supposed to be more precise and have a higher dpi over the 500. And it looks badass :)

as far as the intellimouse....never used one. Loved my mx700 way too much to change
 
Ok. Of the logitechs, it will be the MX510 then. I admit I wouldn't mind getting that red one. Looks kind of neat.

Still, I am listening to other suggestions. Heh, even others like Abit or whatever. Whatever seems to work best for gaming. I'm especially considering comfort here. I play games too much. ^_^ Lol, just recently I started playing Diablo 2 again just because I felt like an ultra-light RPG again. I forget sometimes how hard that is on one's hand... Not to mention eyes. (Somehow this game makes one straign more than any other. And I'm even using Glide mode thanks to a very nice wrapper so that it runs more smoothly.)

One thing I worried about btw. What is "cruise control"? It makes me think of some kind of thing that tries to guess what you want the mouse to do. GOD I hate things that do things for you... I turn off autocomplete and all that sort of crap because it just messes me up so much when things do stuff for me as more than half the time they get it wrong. I can't even imagine the damage such a thing would do to gaming...

EDIT: Upon closer examination of that picture, there are two extra buttons, one above and one below the wheel. These might also work as alternatives to that extra horizontal axis on the new IntelliMouse. It seems to me from what I've seen that the extra axis almost might as well be digital. Getting it to move just a little would be pretty hard. Now that I think of it, the reason I didn't use the side buttons on my current mouse is because of the fact that you have to install their stupid software and set them up to pretent to be keyboard buttons to get them recognized as something other than button 3 in most games. What about this mouse? Does it show more than the normal 3 buttons in games?

EDIT2: Found a review comparing a somewhat cheap mouse that claimed to have 850 DPI resolution and saying that it ran more smoothly and accurately than the Intellimouse 4.0. Unless someone says something else, I'm definitely going with one of the two Logitechs.
 
Ive had the Intellimouse 4.0 now for a month and I can't stand gaming with it. The "innovative" scroll wheel has no clicking so I can't tell which weapon I am choosing in games. However, I can vouch for its sensor being very nearly as good as a any of the logitechs. Never had any tracking problems whatsoever. But if I were you I would go ahead and pay the little bit of extra money and get the 510.
 
Alright. Thanks everyone for the input. I'm definitely going with the MX510. Even if there was nothing wrong with the IntelliMouse, obviously the MX510 is quite good and I won't regret getting it.

EDIT: Just got the mouse. Loving it already. I didn't even have to install the drivers. The only button that doesn't work without them is that strange thing that I think is either for maximizing windows or for switching applications. (I think I read application switch somewhere.) Which is for the best then since I wouldn't want to bump that in the middle of a game...... I love the high resolution thing, though I absolutely HAD to increase the mouse speed just for normal windows, lol.
