How's warranty service and tech support for each brand?
I don't think anybody has information proving that any brand is better or worse than average, but the data recovery experts at HDDguru.com seem to prefer the way Samsungs are designed, and the Russian recovery company StoreLab likes Hitachis and says Seagate designs newer than the 7200.11 are reliable. OTOH the 2TB Samsung and Hitachi drives I tested with MHDD had a few sectors that couldn't be read in less than about a dozen attempts, while WD Green 2T EARS (64MB cache) and Hitachi 1TB drives never needed more than 4-5 tries.
They seem to send you upgrades from time to time while Seagate I have yet to get an upgrade. Although that is probably because 7200.10s and 7200.11s seem to have a much higher failure rate than any other drive so its likely that Seagate has more refurbished drives in stock..
All WD i've had have been amazingly good, never had one fail yet *touch wood*. I currently have a pair of Caviar Black 1Tb drives in RAID-0, they're solid.
Because of this i was leaning towards the WD Green drive but was wondering if i could save a few £ with a Samsung or Seagate.
I may end up just going with the Green to be honest.
The samsung is 20MB/s faster than the WDC green. At home I have 2 of each. At work I have dozens of drives from each of the following: Seagate, WDC and Hitachi. In the last year I have had failures from all 3 of those manufacturers with significantly more problems with Seagate drives. Although most of my Seagate drives were purchased in 2008 with the others from then to last month. Although my sample size (50 to 100) is way too small to say anything about the whole population. I would assume you need 10s of thousands of drives to be able to talk statistics..
For backup I would not worry too much, just get two of something that is fairly cheap and has no known mass failure issues, and always run two jobs. The odds of two drives failing AND you needing those backups is very slim. If it actually happens, even raid 51 wont save you. LOL
Also get a drive dock, they are awesome for backups.
I may be wrong, but I would think green drives are the best bet for backups as they are probably designed better for lot of on/off cycling.
