Hello,
I've started 6 months ago with my quest for a new monitor and although I have gathered a lot of information it remains a difficult choice. The market changes in a fast manner and the choice is more difficult when you want an allrounder.
I will be using the monitor mostly for photographic work and webdevelopment, but also for video editing and classic work like office, programming and internet. I do rarely play games. This means a mix of both colour- and non colour managed applications. I don't print often but nevertheless when I do I like to have a certain degree of quality both at home as when sending to a printlabo. Although most labo's print in sRGB I think it would be nice to see pictures who benefit from a wide gamut on a wide gamut screen. I already have bought a Eye-one Display 2 to calibrate my future monitor.
Which of the following screens would you recommend?
1)Samsung 245T : Excellent monitor according to prad.de; has about 92% of sRGB colours. sRGB mode is working well, but some primary colours are not as good as in aRGB.
2) Dell 2408-WFP : Wide gamut monitor but according to the forums I have read, the sRGB mode (even after calibration) is terrible making it, I think, useless for everything other than colour-managed applications. Many persons seem to have problem with this. What makes it attractive is it low price tag and the fact it is using the same panel as the Samsung 245T, which received excellent score at prad.
3) Belinea 2485 S1W : Excellent screen according to prad.de. Is a real sRGB screen but has no dhcp which seems to be a big disadvantage in the future.
4) Eizo S2411W. Is more expensive than the other screens but comes with longer warranty and death pixel warranty. I don't know if the extra price is worth it.
5) Following screens are good but to expensive. I'm not a professional photographer.
- Eizo SX2461W
- Eizo CG241W (uniform brightness)
- Nec 2490WUXI : not available in Europe but the 26" wide gamut version is available
One point which make me really thinking about is "wide gamut". Is a wide gamut screen really bad in displaying sRGB? After all, most wide gamut screen do not even display 100% of sRGB (or RGB???) , so why would a sRGB screen which covers 92% of sRGB be so bad? Or is it in practice perfect workable?
Thanks for your advise.
John
