I'm looking for something that'll sit on top of a Dell Monitor Stand. Looking at the capabilities of the machines that'll sit in there and the frequency with which I'll be using it (not often), a 22" seems to be the right balance of cost vs display size.

Which 22-incher would you recommend? Gaming is not a factor with these machines so ultra-fast response is not a big issue.If you gave me a choice, image quality and stability of image with both VGA and DVI connection will probably be a bigger factor.

It would be nice if the monitor had component or S-Video input so that I can hook up a DVD player to it as well, but not a mandatory requirement. I am looking at the Dell E228 but would appreciate other options, especially if it has the additional comp/svid connections.
 
Yeah - it doesn't seem like a bad monitor to me. I got one with a Vostro desktop I ordered for testing and it does seem quite decent. Since it'll be sitting quite high thanks to the stand, the lack of a height adjustment is probably not a big deal.

It's just that there are a bewildering range of 22" monitors out there and I can't look through all their specs, and I figure there has to be a better deal than the Dell... or is there?
 
I would suggest quality > quantity and get a 20" that isn't TN, but I've seen one of the HP w2207 panels in person and it's probably the best TN I've seen so far.
 
Aren''t most 20"'s around a 22"'s price range TN anyway?
 
The HP is a nice one. I work at costco and we have it but only sells with computer and not alone :(
It really looks just like the samsung monitor though so go for that one if HP monitor is your liking.

you can also go up to the 226BW... it's the same size, but has 2ms response in stead of 5ms and i believe a higher contrast ratio... a little more money, but there's still a $20 rebate for that till the end of Aug...

I just got a Samsung 245BW (24" wide, 5ms) and absolutely love it... also, a co-worker has the 204B (20.1", 4:3) and says it's a great monitor... (we both work in IT... if that matters to anyone)...

honestly, for the money, Samsung is a pretty decent deal IMO...
 
I've ordered a 226BW. It was cheap and in stock :p I attempted to read part of that looooong thread about it but lost interest halfway though. All I can glean is that it's not too terrible a monitor, but that I might get lucky and get a better panel than average. We'll see.

lol... that sucks... i was going to get the 226BW originally, but my laptop won't do 1680X1050 on the external display... i don't know why cause it's running this 245BW at 1920X1200 just fine right now... but i tried a couple different drivers and support chats with both ATI and Gateway to no avail... so rather than risk getting a monitor that i'm not sure i can use, i just jumped up to the next size...
 
Do not get a 22" LCD, from what I hear they all tend to be very evil.

I have a Samsung 226BW which is a nice step up from a 17" CRT but damn man, the viewing angles are crap. I swear, you can be 3' away from it and be correctly centered and the top and bottom will still have very noticeable color discoloration. Very common with TN panels I suppose.

Anyway get a panel that isn't a TN and one that has a nice pixel pitch for you :) I really can't stand high density pixel monitors, my eyes can't handle it.
 
Easier said than done I think from what I've been reading.

Besides, it's not a critical use so I'm not very worried.
