Which 22" display to get?

My old 19" CRT is slowly dying and I'd like to replace it with a 22" widescreen TFT. I've been doing some searching, and so far I've found the following brands.

Mirai
Samsung
Acer
Asus
iiyama

Both the mirai and iiyama didn't do great in reviews, and a lot of people seem to be experiencing backlight bleeding with the Samsung. The Acer is reported to have 16.2m colours, so that's a no go. That leaves the Asus, a screen I can't seem to find any review or user experience on.

I will use the screen primarily for gaming and watching movies. So little to no backlight bleeding or ghosting are pretty important.

Are there people here with 22" screens that can share their experience. And what about the Asus, is anything known about that one?

Looks nice indeed. Something I'm curious about is the way panels are used. All these screens use a TN panel, and you'd think therefore that image quality will be the same. But the specs do differ somewhat. The Spectre you pointed out has a contrast ratio of 1200:1, the rest of the panels have 700:1. And the Asus has a response time of 2ms compared to the 5ms the other panels do.

Could anyone explain that? Is it possible for manufacturers to actually tweak the panels they use? Or is this just marketing bs?

It's a combination of marketing bs (quoting gray to gray response or fudging numbers altogether) and different electronics driving the panels. Since there are no standards for measuring contrast you pretty much have to rely on in-depth reviews or your own eyes to see if the marketing numbers add up. Sometimes when you see differing contrast ratios for the same panel it means the manufacturer is using some sort of "dynamic contrast control" which may or may not be a good thing..

So in the end the difference will probably be negligible? A shop around the corner here has the iiyama for a nice price, but I was planning on waiting for the Asus.

Also, is there any word on non-TN 22" panels being introduced in the near future? The 24" are still too expensive for me, but I'd be happy to pay an extra $100/$150 to have an IPS instead of TN.

Instead of saying you're in the market for a 22" screen, why don't you look for a 1680x1050 monitor? This will put you into 20"-22" screen range and give you some better choices if you don't mind going slightly smaller. Some people feel the pixels are too large on the 22"ers anyway (although you can just try sitting farther from the monitor to correct that problem).

I just ordered the SAMSUNG 225BW off newegg. It looks like it will arrive here on Monday so I'm pretty excited to be replacing my 19" CRT. I'll let you know what I think.

i'm looking into this too. anyone know how the benq 22 incher is ?

I am under the same dilemma. I was also looking at the Sceptre 22" http://www.sceptre.com/Products/LCD/Specifications/spec_x22wg_NagaP.htm Looks sweet!
Everyone has mentioned only a few of many new 22" LCD Monitors out or due out soon (see list below). As far as I can tell, these are all based on the same 22" TN panels made by CMO, although competitors Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), Beijing BOE Optoelectronics Technology (BOE OT), and even LG-Philips are gearing up to ship 22" panels in early 2007. They see the 19" market dying and the 22" widescreen market becoming very hot.

- Acer AL2216Wbd (widely available and now on clearance - has no HDCP support)
- AOC 22LVWK (available soon)
- ASUS (Asustek) MW221U (available soon)
- BenQ FP222W (available now at Newegg and also Compsource.com)
- Chi Mei 221D (available at Newegg)
- Dell 22" (Rumored for early 2007...no name or price yet)
- Fujitsu-Siemens L22-W-2DV (just released in Europe)
- Gateway FPD2275W (available now at J&R, Best Buy w/4 USB, DVI, VGA, S-Video, PIP, Nice Stand)
- Hannstar 22" (Rumored only...may be available early 2007)
- KDS K-22MDWB (available now)
- MAG WB22D (available soon, w/ beefy stand)
- MAG WB22TD (available soon, same model w/ cheap plastic stand)
- Meiji JT229ZP (available early 2007, has 2 DVI ports)
- Mirai DML-522W100 (now available in Europe)
- Samsung 225BW (widely available)
- Sceptre x22wg (available now at Costco and Newegg)
- V7 R22W02 (available soon)
- Viewsonic VX2235wm (widely available, including just about any Costco warehouse)
- Viewsonic VG2230wm (available now...it's a VX2235wm w/ better stand)
- Viewsonic VX2245wm (available at year's end w/ Ipod dock, 8-in-1 card reader, 4 USB ports)
- Westinghouse LCM-22W2 (available only at Best Buy for $500)

Interestingly, with all of these 22-inchers coming, the Sceptre x22wg will still be the only one with a HDMI port. That means it has 3 simultaneous graphic inputs: VGA, DVI and HDMI. The monitor supposedly has higher contrast than the rest, too, if the numbers are to be believed. If you are a gamer you will love it. I own the Sceptre and just ordered a second one. If you want a no-dead-pixel policy then Costco is your best option. You can take any monitor they sell back for a full refund - even the shipping cost if you bought it from them online. (As of Nov 15 they were back in stock.) The Samsung 225BW's stand is nice. I added an even nicer monitor stand called the Neo-Flex by Ergotron to my Sceptre. They are on clearance for under $50 at Staples, CompUSA and elsewhere. Check your nearest Staples store: some report the shelf price for these at $29.99. (See my earlier posts on FatWallet for easy mounting.) BTW, the thin black bezels on the Samsungs and Sceptres are nearly identical IMO.

Does anyone have any experience with that Westinghouse? I'm thinking of picking one up the day after Thanksgiving.

These new 22" LCD widescreen monitors based on the CMO 1680x1050 TN panel just keep coming....
Here's another new one at Costco for just $249.99 after $50 rebate!!! It is the X2GEN MW22U 22" widescreen LCD. For the money the specs look good. Its Windows Vista ready which may mean its HDCP capable, too. I have an inquiry in to X2gen to verify... :)
Check out my revised previous post above......now up to 22 different models with this X2GEN!
