i am the type of person who doesnt really care about bass, any set should suffice
and when i game i hate when alot of the midrange explosions get shoved into the mono bass (i like to know direction of these pitches)
i also like really crisp mid ranges where human voices will be extremely clear.
as for the high end, i like it to be loud and free of distortion

yep 2.1, surround sound doesnt work in my environment, and i have headphones that deliver the sense of direction better for me than speakers seem to, (but yes they suck worse)
 
Someone else asked about 2.1's on here and I recommended that they try some 2.0's instead. You said you don't care about bass so you don't need a sub. Studio monitors would be the way to go because they're, typically, extremely accurate, since they're used in mastering recordings and for other critical listening tasks. They'll go very loud without distortion or damage. You'll never want or need to turn these above half-volume, which is recommended for any amplifier in anything. Thse speakers will typically have well matched, built in amps and only need a mini-->RCA cable if you're soundcard doesn't have standard RCA output's. The digital ones will do onboard digital to analog conversion and will need an optical digital input or an SPDIF input cable from the soundcard, directly to the speaker.

Any of those speakers will give you the most bang for your buck if you're looking for accurate speakers that you can listen to at higher volumes without distorting.

the Klipsch PM 2.1's are far superior to any other 2.1's. BTW, the THX certification doesn't mean shit, its purely a marketing gimmick.
