just to start this off, I understand that whatever my bottleneck is, I know that everything's still not going to run great with that replaced. I just got a 9800 pro, took out a 9000 128 and felt awful when my fps barely changed in games. I was told that my ram was probably the problem, as my main issue is not being able to run multiplayer games (specifically ut2k4) with many bots before it really starts jerking. I can understand that logic, but the 400 fsb and the celeron scare me quite a bit too. in bios it says my cpu frequency is 100MHz. I'm on a strict budget and would like to know what to replace first

2 256's of ram with no stickers on them (handmedown ram)
p4vmm2 motherboard
Radeon 9800 pro 128
 
processor sounds fine, just need some bios tweakin. as far as ram, get urself atleast 1 gig of ram ( 2 X 512 ) pc3200 and you should be ok
 
Your going to run into a lot of limitation with that ECS board..

But you do have the worst of the celerons unfortunately, IE 2.4Ghz but with only 100x4 FSB and 128KB L2 cache.

Your problem is if you want to replace the memory or the processor you will want to replace the board as well since it only supports the up to a 533FSB P4, which are hard to come by nowadays, and truly only supports DDR266 or PC2100.
 
yeah, that board is crap. I'd love to play with things in the bios but it doesn't support anything decent. Persoanlly I'd like to replace that first but since people keep telling me that I need more ram I'm also tihnking about getting a 60$ 512 of 3200 and getting the board later but if I could find a 478 mobo for around that canadian I'd buy that instead

yeah 512 is still sufficent for a majority of games, board than proc as diablo111 said
 
replace your motherboard, then RAM, then CPU.

make sure you tweak for now in order to get the most out of your system that you can.

 
I'd have to digress and say GET NEW RAM FIRST. Even though the processor doesn't "Support" higher speed ram, it can still run 1024MB at the lower speed, and that will help immensely. It's like a shot of adrenaline, you will really be able to feel that upgrade. Then, when you get a chance, I'd do the motherboard and processor at the same time.
