psu so far works fine ... used jonnys two index fingers to create a load, used his tongue to short the green wire and one of his toes to short the black wire ...

fired it up and BAM, it worked :)

I have tried many different outlets and even just to try and power a fan and ... johnys liking it more and more :)

he must be sadistic ... :D

1. attach a load, it needs a load, try a few fans and an old HDD or optical

2. take a paper clip and short the green wire (power on) to any of the black wires (ground)
at the main mobo connector

ATX isnt like old AT power supplies, they constantly power the mobo for softpower on (wake with keyboard, wake on LAN, wake on WAN) so the mobo sends a signal for the rest of the PSU to fire up, the current is less than 1 amp +5V (+5Volt Stand by actually +5VSB)
so you wont even feel it holding the paperclip

keep the constant power part in mind as well when you are building, dont add memory or cards while the PSU is switched on

see the ESD & Electromigration Rant

Thanks guys :)

A few Questions -

The Psu came with 4 molex / sata [ 2 of the molex have a 4 pin FDD power and 2 of the molex have a 6 pin ( only five pins inside ) at the end of the chain ], 2 PCIE 6 pin on both ends, a 24 pin main, a 8 pin main, and a psu fan connector. With that said, how do I ...

- I do not see anywhere on the board where to place the 2 PCIE 6 pin connectors. I do not see anywhere on the 6800 GT where to place them either :). What do I do with them?

- connect something to the 4 hole +12v power under the main poewer connector? I think the 8 pin main splits but I am not sure

- the 5v / 12 v power connector, the one between the cpu socket and the Dfi chipset fan, should I just use one of the 4 molex for that leaving me with 3 left?

- the guide shows 4 power connectors need to be placed, I do not think I have any connector for the 4 pin floppy ON THE BOARD, what should I do?

- what are the molex that have a 6 pin ( only five pins inside ) at the end of the chain?

- my 6800 GT barely just misses the Dfi chipset fan, is that a problem or will it prevent the fan from creating the air it needs?

I thought I was supposed to get 8 molex chains?

I know alot of questions, however, I havent built a system in a while and alot of this new technology is new to me :)

eeh, thares a power connector on the 6800gt, black, a total of 6 pins, pcie connector goes in that,

also, wtf with the 6 thing, wow

dude

got the 4 pin connector plugged the board for cpu power

got the 24 pin connector plugged in for the mobo

got the hdds and shir plugged in, if so, ok, do not hook anything elese upo on the board

sounds like you got it
the auxillary +12V mobo connector is either 4 or 8 pins (yellow and black wires)
even an 8 pin that doesnt split will plug in directly if there is clearence, the proper 4 pins being keyed to fit without a hammer :p

workstations, servers and some very power hungry gaming boards employ the full 8 pins
its nice you have that, your next board may as well ;)

I found the PCIe plug on the card :) I guess I use the 2 red PCIe connectors. Damn that card is so close the DFI chipset fan it might even be touching it

what about this -
- the guide shows 4 power connectors need to be placed, I do not think I have any connector for the 4 pin floppy ON THE BOARD, what should I do?

The guide says I need to put a connector on the boards 4 pin floppy power plugs and one on the molex on the board too, do I both?

What are the 6 pin [ black ones ] at the end of the molex chain for?

no, i personally never used the 4 pin floppy connector, its for cads in sli that draw power only from the pcie poers, yours does not, so no worries, does the rig start

I got 4 or 5, 4 pin Stacker fans to connect to and I do not think I am going to have enough molex for everything ...

Every freakin review I read on the Liberty said you will have more than enough molex connectors for anyones use

ok

only plug in the p4,and 24 pin connectors on the mobo. The one thing that you need toplug in also is the gfx crd, hdd, and cdrom, should work

I got everything out on a piece of wood. I put one stick of ram [ orange slot closest to edge ], 6800 GT, cpu, hetsink, ps2 keyboard.

I boot up, and I get all the ay to verifying DMI pool and then disk failure which I know is because I have no HD. So am I good to go?

Bt the way, i did the above with the 4 pin molex in and not connected and got the same thing. So do i need that connected or not?

A question on my video card. I first did this on the top white DVI connector. I used a DVI to Vga then to monitor. When I did this on the top DVI connector I get nothing but on the bottom DVI connector it works [ the above ]. Is my top DVI connector broken or is it used only as a SECOND device?

I just went to do memtest and it appears I have some sort of a problem with the heatsink fan. After a few seconds the fan stops and rotates in 1 / 4 quarter turns per revolution. Could this because the Ultra - d bios is set to turn off the cpu fan if the cpu is less than or higher than a certain temperature?

Someone suggested I set it to work at 100% all the time but it appears the bios goes as low as > 25 C and < 25 C

It does not happen all the time. This is the second time it has done it in about 10 power up ( looking for memtest )

By the way, the temps I posted above were with the fan spinning. I am sure about that

What should I do?

What's the temp, Athlon64s don't run that hot.

it was 41 C while looking in the bios, after I reseated it I got it down to 32 C and after I installed XP I rebooted in to the bios and it was 41 C

The Ultra - d had 4 power connections. The 2 main plus a molex and a 4 pin floppy power connector.

If I plug in the boards 4 pin floppy, I am left with no floppy power ... if I plug in the boards 4 pin molex [ between the cpu and chipset fan ] I am left with 3 molex ... and I still have 4 or 5 Stacker 4 pin fans to connect

And all is this is with out my HDs and Optical drives. Everywhere I read about this Psu it says you will have enough connectors for every use, huh ..

Does anyone know where I can get some good quality connectors. I guess I need some pretty long 4 pin molex Y cables. I am willing to pay a few dollars extra for some good quality products

According to their website, you should have this.

Eternity Pair (SATA+4P Molex) 8 pairs (6+6)
PCI-E 2
FDD 2

What's the problem? For fans, just stick all of them on 1 molex or something, using http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812101203 or something like that. You should have enough. I know for my NeoPower480, I can buy extra cables for it off Antec's site, but I couldn't find it on Enermax's site.

I am going to need some good quality Y cables, anyone know a place that has rather nice ones?

what about something like this to connect the stacker case fans

or is this a piece of crap :)

Id disagree, crimp quality, wire guage, connector quality, pin quality all make for good or bad harnesses or harness accessories, you simply need to compare a cheap Deer or a poorly redone home repin to what youd see on a PCP&C or S-12 to know there can be a massive difference
relating directly to resistance

the search term your looking for is

I have no specific sources to recommend currently

Someone please change the subject. I know l3wd just found out that ATX power supplies don't just turn on with the flip of a switch, but it kills me to see "Dead Liberty" every morning when I hit the forums. :)

I could always toss it in the soapbox, itd look right at home :p
ot maybe in General Software and we could start discussing DRM and encroachment on fair use :p

all the original poster need ask is for a title change and either me or Spectre will be happy to ;)

Please remove johnys panties from his ... so it be cool to re - title this thread to what ever you want :D

Maybe then johny can share his vast knowledge and answer some more questions instead of looking over many threads he knows about :D :D

one should always be careful what one wishes for :p

especially around perverse smartasses like the [H]ardStaff :p

So.... How's that Liberty working for ya? :D

your reputation as a cantacerous prickly knee jerk reactionary is just a front isn't it?
your just a warm cuddly teddybear underneath :p

we have a new title more in keeping with the current topic ;)

lw3d, Id recommend the new question be edited into the top of the thread
but leave the old one below it for continuity

EDIT> where can I get.....
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Old question

;)

If someone makes a guide showing how to make their own cables it be great

that make for a great little exercise in moding

You know, I was thinking about doing that because the question always comes up.

I've got the tools (just bought the Sunbeam tool kit and a pair of Molex crimpers from Performance PC's last week) and have plenty of power supplies.

I just need the time.

Maybe next week. But I don't think you can wait that long. ;)

;)

I updated the first two posts in this thread :D

For the guide, the sooner the better ... thats if you still have feeling in your fingers ^^ :)

what Id like to do is an ultra paranoid wiring harness shielding the power leads to contain EMF (a single point grounded sheath -faraday cage-, itself sheathed in a non-conductive sleeving)

strangely I actually have a reason, even though Im already employing shielded thermocouple leads reducing the EMF hell in the test case isnt going to hurt. I hope to be mapping EM Fields in an "average" case eventually, but a decent guassmeter is still pretty far down the list of aquisitions

as well as "upgrading" connectors and pins
I bought alot of tools, but my crimping leaves something to be desired

I pretty much have the system setup ... the one thing I can not stand is the cables all over the place

I used tie locks and electric taped some wires but it still needs help :)

Thanks for the heads up ...

Do you think home depot or lowes would have this or something similar ... I think all the local sandys electronics went out of business around here

maybe the local do it yourself true value hardware

Even Auto Zone and Radio Shack has that stuff.
