Where would I send a HD to retrieve the data?

I have a drive that "died" from a short and was wondering where I would send it in order to retrieve that data on it? I heard there are places that specialise in this.
I can replace the part that shorted but I was just wondering because I don't want to deal with it right now.

I hope you realize how expensive all these places are... not even for a gaurentee or anything that you'll get what you want.

With most places they'll scan your drive and give you a listing of the files they can recover for a relativly low flat rate. Recovering the data and actually getting it back is the hella expensive part.

Of course, it does depend on what methods they have to pursue to rescue your data...

Save the money and replace it yourself. Unless you seriously don't have time to do it (and assuming you know what to do...), then do a google search. There are loads of companies that recover data, including a sub-division of the company I work for.

if you elect to recover it yourself by replacing the circuitboard, contact the manufacturer for a list compatible models (there are all sorts of incremental changes in the master model line)

example
WD400BB-00DEA0
WD400BB-00CAA0

Thanks. I think I'm going to try and find the time to do it myself (we all have to learn sometime) but it looks like its not really needed since I was able to restore most (older versions) of the data.
