Where to put a server in a dorm?

Hi, I am a collage student, and I need to run a server for hosting my website and general playing around with Linux. The problem is that my dorm is all one room, and in most places I have tried putting my computer, I can still hear it working at night!

Does anyone here know what I can do to reduce the noise? I don't have the time or money to buy new hardware, but I would be happy to sort something DIY out. :)
 
It would help us if you gave the physical specifications of your server.
 
What makes the most noise the fans?
If so just make a box out of some plywood or mdf insulate it and put a few low nose fans.
alteratly if its 1 u open the top take out the blowers and place in a custom enclosure and put some low flow fans in.
 
Hang it out the window.

Aside from that, look into replace the fans with quieter ones or putting resistors on them to slow them down some and place it either in a closet or under you bed so that there is at least something between you and it.
 
No idea what you have, therefore we have no idea what makes the noise you speak of, therefore we have no idea how to make it quieter. Maybe some more details.

Although, if your room has a closet...
 
Its a desktop computer, core 2 duo stock cooler. The problem is, I can't turn it off to change the fans etc.
 
why can't you shut it down for a few minutes while you change the fans?

If the issue is actually purchasing quieter fans I'd say your only real option would be volt modding your fans to run at 7v instead of 12v.

If you can't park the page for a couple of hours to do maintenance, it's obviously too important to be running on a hand-me-down desktop in a dorm room.
