I will be ordering a small lcd thermometer to place on my case window to monitor my temps while in game or times when I cant see my core temp.

How accurate can I get with a physical sensor and not the sensor on the cpu, and where is the best place to place the sensor?

I would think under the heatsink, right between the base and the chip, but of course this is not practical. :p

If it's a small enough thermocouple, stick it between the CPU heatsink fins (in contact with them) as close to the CPU as possible. Make sure it stays in place - this could be a challenge finding the idea place to glue/tape the wire so the end stays put.

Once you've got it in place, run the CPU at different loads and calibrate the CPU temp vs your new thermometer temp. Then you'll know that if the new gadget hits, say 45C, the CPU is, say, 49C. If the LCD display value is adjustable, you might be able to adjust it to display actual CPU temp by shifting it up a few degrees in the range where CPU temps are a concern.
