where to get copper...

anyone have suggestions for local places to get copper? it seems that lowes/home depot don't carry copper stock (1/4" || 3/8" || 1/2" thick would be good - i could work with any of those)

i could get stuff online, but that doesn't work as well (i have to convince my dad to pay for it cuz he has the credit cards and such and i can't get my own yet)

i need more cuz i'm running out of copper and i need to make a few more waterblocks. (only have a few small sections left, nothing much, and also not enough) the stuff i have also requires a h3lla lot of sanding to make it flat, and the belt sander doesn't make it quite flat (it rounds it, so even more sanding is necessary... sucks) and the belts i have are also all worn out.

the stuff i had came from a junkyard (my uncle got it for me) and i don't know of any junkyards near to where i live.

//easily placed question if you don't want to read all that://
what type of store would be likely to carry copper stock (plumbing, etc) and does anyone know of any good stores in or around laurel, maryland?

Look in your phone book for a Metal Fabricators or maybe a Machine shop might even be able to get it for you. I am sure a local plumbing supply place could order it for you (Was a plumber for years) they would not have it in stock but they could at least tell you where to get it local or could order it in for you.

Aluminum would be easy to get but would not work near as well for what your doing with it.
You might even be able to get some at a place like a boat yard type place. They might have brass and if they do then they would be able to at least order copper from the same place they get that from.

Hope this helps you out some. I am sure some place local should if they do not have it at least be able to give you a price and be able to order it. Many places will have what is called sheet copper but that would be to thin for what you want.

i tried locating copper where I live (form every metal fab or machine shop in town) quite a bit and I usually got the same list of responses:
-- yeah, we have some scraps but no idea what type of copper it is...looks like its about 1" x 20".
-- have you checked with mcmaster-carr?
--nope, you'd have to drive to X city to get that.
--we could order it but it would take X days and would cost you $$$. [x days was always several days longer than online metals or mcmaster-carr would take to get it to me, $$$ always being higher than online metals or mcmaster-carr even after shipping.]

the copper you want for a waterblock is usually a size or an alloy that makes it such that you will not find it laying around at some local shop unless you just get lucky as hell.

that's kind of the impression i got when i went looking for copper sheeting for one of my blocks i was trying... ended up cutting lengths off of a copper pipe and flattening those out. not much fun, but it worked (sort of)

looks like mcmaster-carr is probably my best bet. though $23 for a 3/8" thick piece of 2"x12" is a bit costly... o well. the polycarbonate is cheaper ($13 for a 12"x12" piece 1/2" or 3/8" thick) and i'm using that for tops so i don't have to worry about soldering, just going to get o-rings.

thanks anyway, but still post suggestions if you have any.

Forget copper! Make the waterblock out of silver :)

silver would cost a bit much for my tastes... i need to buy ut2k4 still:D and i'd be too scared i'd screw up to do anything so i'd have to draw up careful plans and get the guy i know who has access to a mill to do it for me... to pricey.

the dangerden stuff looks more cost effective (slightly) but i need other stuff as well (o-ring cord and polycarbonate for tops) so mcmaster-carr looks like it for me. i also need a new 11/16" drill bit and more tap sizes etc.

You're going to CNC it, right? Don't tell me you're not cause that would be just insane.

Why would that be insane? Most people don't have a CNC mill at their disposal... My block was made with an ordinary 2-axis mill and many people have made blocks with much less.

CNC what now? i made my waterblock with a dremel, a drillpress, and a heavy-duty bandsaw! then the b*tch leaked cuz i didn't seal it very well (leaked out of where i had silver solder on the top around the inlet, wasn't any other way to do it tho:() i need more copper to rebuild a cpu block and make a gpu and chipset block.

right now i'm running a fun setup on my athlon: the intel cooler for a p4 with holes drilled in it for mounting with a 92mm tornado bolted to it. works alright at 1825mhz/1.85 vcore (cuz i feel like it, it'll go faster i just don't want it to right now b/c of temps) but DAMN i'm glad my brother is letting me borrow a pair of headphones from his recording studio! (cheap ones he doesn't like very much, but they noise-cancel ok)

i'm looking at doing another jet impingement block but with a different impinger setup. and a lexan top so i don't have to solder anything:D (because that discolors the copper)

anyway time to find some money to buy the stuff i need and then go buy it and hope it gets here before the end of my spring break so i can do something with it. later...
