i have a friend who is staying in Boston Massachusetts for a week and i want him to buy an Unlocked iPhone 4s for my sister and an unlocked Samsung galaxy s2 for myself.

He already looked at the apple store but cant find an unlocked Iphone 4s...so where can i find these in Boston???

any help would be appreciated :)

you can check craisglist or ebay to see if people have some unlocked phones.

Otherwise i dont know where you could buy a new unlocked iphone. You can buy a new one and follow instructions online to root it and unlock it yourself.

the s2 can be bought from att/tmo unlocked, iphone possibly at att as well

att is AT&T Wireless, t-mo is T.Mobile, they are the main 2 GSM service providers in the US, I'm assuming you need gsm

So long as you buy it from the store, they should have it unlocked, and it should work with Vodafone, you will need to research what bands Vodafone uses in your area for data, to decide if you want to get a ATT or a T-Mobile phone

Neither AT&T nor T-Mobile use the same bands that Europe does. Expect not to get any 3G service should you take most branded phones across the pond (even if it is unlocked). The 1700/2100 that T-Mobile uses is not the same as the 2100 you find in Europe. To answer your question however, if you want an officially unlocked iPhone, newegg carries them http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875100045 as well as the Samsung Galaxy S II http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875176292.

I think the iPhone can only be purchased unlocked online. You *might* be able to do it from an Apple Store but I am not sure.

Hmmm, good info bluefox, i figured the bands were the same... Getting a pentaband phone would solve the issue I think

edit: unless you are down under that is, I think their data band matches t-mobile, but again i'm not sure

You are aware that most phones don't only have ATT or T-mobile bands? They usually have triband or quadband for overseas use. But I would check the bands to make sure they are what you need. The iphone for example has UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) bands. I am not sure what vodafone uses for 3g.

The iPhone 4s can only be bought unlocked from an apple store. If you buy it from ATT it will be locked to ATT. Here is an apple store website http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/ They are new and in demand now, so finding one in store might be hard. The website is 1-2 weeks backordered on shipping dates.

The Galaxy S2 will also be locked to ATT. You cannot buy an unlocked one in the USA unless you go to a small shop somewhere and buy an imported one from the UK. You might be able to unlocked an ATT version for overseas use using a program, but I am not sure if one exists as I don't have the phone. You can buy one from an ATT store though website http://www.att.com/storelocator/

Most branded phones have quad band GSM, not quad band UMTS. This nets you voice and low speed data everywhere, but no 3G. The iPhone is one of the few exceptions (and isn't actually branded anyway). As for the iPhone and Galaxy S II being only available from certain stores or locked, did you completely ignore my links?

iPhone 4S should be available unlocked in Apple stores. I know of someone who just picked one up in Florida. If not you can also find them on the Apple website.

you can also get a s2 from T-Mobile, if they use the bands you need

unlocked iphone at apple store
i did it for the 4s a few times
galaxy s2 from craigslist
