Where to attach a Temperature Probe to the i7 920?

Side of the CPU, on top between the heatsink and cpu? And if on top, directly on top of the cores? to the sides?

Does this interfeer with the cooling at all?

And what should be used to make sure the Probe stays in place? Thanks!
 
The only place that would actually give you a good temperature readout would be right on top, but you would have to modify the heatspreader in order to be able to put a probe there without interfering with the heatsink's contact. I would recommend just not bothering with it altogether.
 
Would on the side help a little? Problem is, there isn't any software solution to monitor temperatures, and I like having that ability while I am gaming etc.
 
Real Temp is the best software solution for monitoring temperatures, and it would probably be more accurate than having a probe mounted on the side of a CPU. The problem with having the probe on the side is that the CPU die is in the center of the package, and the heat is transferred up into the heatsink and not toward the side where the probe would be.
