Where is my weakness?

Ok, so this is my first overclock. I've been here for a month or so now and have read hundreds of posts. I have tried numerous settings, voltages, and timings to try and get a higher clock, but I am not having any luck getting it stable over 2.71.

My three main components are;

SIS 645E Max U mobo that only supports up to 533bus. (vCore is set at auto/SPD)

P4 2.4B (133x18 stock) (currently @ 150x18 = 2.71ghz)

1 Gig PC2700 generic ram (currently @ 4:5, 2.5-3-3-7, vdimm 2.8)

(Ok Ok, I know my generic ram sucks, I bought it when I was a n00b last year and didn't know anything about internals.)

So, I'm wondering if you guys can tell me where my biggest weakness is that is preventing me from getting to at least 2.8-3.0. I've read about the B chips, so I'm not really expecting anything over 3.0, but I would like to try and get closer at least.

So as far as the chip goes, would I be better off getting an IS7 mobo that can support 800fsb? Or a 512 chip of Kingston HyperX PC3500? I don't want to spend a lot of money, of course I know both would be better, but if I were to only get one, which would help my clock better? I thought maybe the RAM, but the thing is, even at 4:3 (which is underclocking my RAM), I still can't get over 2.71 stable. No luck with 1:1 either. So that made me think, ok well maybe it's my board because it only supports a 533bus and as it is i'm pushing out 600. Could that be it???

I'm really boggled by this and especially the board question. I'm going to be putting a new system together anyway, but not for a FEW months. So in the mean time, I have a benjamin I can throw into it for overclocking purposes.

Help please! thanks. :)

i didn't know what i was doing when i bought it last year.

If it won't go any higher with a divider underclocking the ram, then it's NOT the RAM. No sense even messing with it. It really looks like the board is limiting you to me. It could be just that the chip won't go any faster, but... I doubt that. That's a not-so-great chipset. I was in a very similer situation not long ago, with an SIS chipset, generic pc2700 ram and a 2.66B. Upgraded to an ABit IS7-E and have never looked back!

That's what I was thinking. That certainly makes the most sense I think. Thanks for the confirmation. :D So, in your situation, were you getting a crappy clock too with your SIS board?

Ok so i just thought of another thing. Maybe my setup can only overclock successfully at 4:5. Because the other dividers (even no divider) give me lesser performance. So, if that is the case, what if I bought faster ram that could handle more of an output from my fsb at 4:5?

You know what I mean though? I can't go any higher at 4:5 right now because of my ram (im guessing, it makes sense). So if I'm having such luck at 4:5 now, wouldn't the luck just keep on comin if I got the faster ram to support the increase?

Or does the last post still sound better you guys think? Toss the SIS Chipset board, get an IS7 and maybe have success at 1:1 or 4:3, unlike I'm able to acheive now?
