Where Do Those Donated XO Laptops Go?

Finally, someone asked the OLPC group the question we’ve all been wondering...“Where are all of those donated XO laptops going?”

An OLPC spokeswoman said that donated laptops would be headed to countries such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, Cambodia, Haiti, and Mongolia--places that generally couldn't afford big laptop giveaways. In general, she said that the donated laptops would help "jump-start" a program in those places, though she said Mongolia and perhaps others on that list might also be eventual customers.

i think they will do well were paper is rare (mountains, deserts, africa etc)... or to costly and polluting to produce. however, i don't see it revolutionizing schools as much as they have in the west without internet support.

its funny but if you read articles in the news yesterday they have to pay 300$/month for internet access in africa at 128kbs... thats more then most schools budgets in africa and parts of asia... so it probably wont happen.

they need a cheaper internet solution. you probably need a cheap xo server to store data as well, security... etc.

a lot of parents complained about theft and porn... so having a server that regulates locations of the pcs and using websense to block adult sites probably would help.

they should probably implement a special signal that teachers could use to disable games in class

That is my big gripe with the program. The program should give you the ability to decide where your donated laptop will go or at least include the U.S., Canada and the UK.
 
Wonder what a kid could trade that laptop for in Mongolia. Probably worth a few decent horses and maybe a new tent.

But these developed countries such as the US, UK, and Canada already have thousands of programs that will help you get what you need, be it money, housing, computers, food, whatever..

The underdeveloped countries don't have any of that. They need the donation more than we do.
 
i agree.

you could always donate some to a local school program or charity, there are tons of school clubs for positive purposes

think outside the box, we should love poor people everywhere the same, well all people lol

its like pretending that pollution in other countries has no harm on the US

Well, it just hits me the wrong way I guess. It's like saying "America is already rich, screw them. Donate to us AND donate to take care of your own...by the way, your last shipment of foriegn aid, food and suplies was late.":

"From now through December 31, 2007, OLPC is offering a Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada."

But no children from our countries are eligible.



They should rename it "Good Enough To Give, Not To Get"

As it sits now, no one is biting on the GO/GO program so they extended it through the end of the year. After the end of the year they will no doubt "extend" it again.
 
If they had put in an educational program that explained to people that sex makes babies, and making babies you cant feed is bad... Then I might donate. (Sounds like I'm being mean, but I'm dead serious).

Also, raping Virgins doesn't cure AIDs.
 
It is difficult to stop sex in areas where there isn't much else to do. It's been quite a few years since people started getting it on and it hasn't stopped yet. Except in Italy, Scotland, Russia, other areas with significantly decreasing native populations.
 
The US population would be decreasing if not for immigration. Atleast according to the last study I read.
