Where can I find Xeon MP's?

See thread...

Also, if these aren't sold alone, could I just use 2 regular Xeons, or should I dash my dreams?

I think this thread would be better served in the SMP forum.

You should be able to purchase any number of MPs from a vendor that carries them. Search Price Watch and you will come up with many vendors. Two MPs can be purchased and run on a dual board. That would be like having two P4EE processors in one machine. However, there's no point. One megabyte Xeon DPs have been available for a while now, and the 2MB Xeon DPs will be released very soon. So, there's no reason in needing MPs unless you will be running them in a quad board with at least 3 processors...

I would just use regular dual xeons considering the price/performance.

Lets not forget Xeon CT coming soon. It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to implement x86 64-bit

This will complicate my decision for the new system I'm planning to build in the summer. Now that Intel officially announced 64-bit extensions for Nocona, I have more reasons to consider this architecture instead of the dual Gallatin setup I was thinking of. The only thing holding me back is the high heat output and partially disappointing performance of the Prescott in current speed grades. Nocona, being based on the same architecture, will probably inherit some of these shortcomings.

Well, I wasn't sure about the regular Xeons being able to work with a second one...thanks for your guys help!

P.S.

When are the Xeon CT's being released, or does no one know yet...
Also, what are their specs supposed to be?

Same question about the new 2MB versions...

Thanks!

Intel hopes to solve their problems with prescott's 90 nanometer process with the d0 stepping. It can be assumed that nocona will have the same improvements.

"Following the Extreme Edition of Intel Pentium 4 processor, the Xeon CPUs for DP platforms will get 2MB of L3 cache in the Q1 2004 to address performance-demanding applications early in 2004. The chip will be made using 0.13 micron fabrication process and will be probably based on the Gallatin core originally developed for MP servers. The launch of the new processor is not set to affect pricing of other models in the family, as the Intel Xeon DP processor 2M at 3.20GHz will be launched at $1043 price-point, a significant increase from $851 price-point of existing Intel Xeon DP processor 1M at 3.20GHz.

The new DP chip will also fit into the current IA32 DP platforms that support 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus.

The Nocona processor for the Lindenhurst and Tumwater platforms will start in the second quarter 2004 at speeds of 2.80GHz, 3.00GHz, 3.20GHz, 3.40GHz and also 3.60GHz. The chips will contain 1MB of L2 cache and implement support for 800MHz Quad Pumped Bus. The Lindenhurst and Tumwater core-logic for 2-way server and workstation applications respectively will sport not only Nocona, but also Jayhawk processor with 2MB of L2 in the first quarter 2005."

L3 = almost worthless. $300 premium (at least) to have an extra 3% performance. You'd have to be stupid to do that.

3.6 will be on the order of $2k or so. I'd wait to see what the prices are before you make a decision. Prices on current will drop after new release.

2K?? Nocona?

I seriously doubt it. It will be a 1MB DP model with no L3 cache at all. High cache commands high dollar in the SMP market.

Based on which benchmarks? Where did you get this figure?

the 2.8ghz Nocona's will be priced at 250-300 dollars, saw it on one of the links from AT, and again at many other sites. I'll probably get me one, erm, TWO of those if I decide not to get a Prescott LGA. And if it takes a while for Prescott/Tejas to get 64-bit, I might as well still get Nocona too...

So I'm guesstimating the 3.6 Narcona with 800 FSB that comes out next quarter would be $700-$900...

Would that be a correct guess?

P.S.
And they're 64-bit ready? Sweet!

Noconas are looking better and better. Let's see what Intel does about the heat and power consumption issues. I estimate that the 3.6GHz model might be around a grand, but don't quote me on that.

I hate to bring back a dead thread, but has anybody heard anything on the Nocona's yet?

IE:

Price, Shipping Date, etc (other then specs...I know those already...

Thanks!
