Interesting read. Its near the end of the year. Out of the so called 12 games listed as using ps3.0, anyone of them out yet?

in development:
Lord of the Rings, Battle For Middle-earth
STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl
Driv3r
Splinter Cell X
Grafan

out:
Vampire: Bloodlines
Tiger Woods 2005
Madden 2005
Painkiller
FarCry patch out

I'm not sure what the other ones were.

It's not as rampant as people think. And its the reason why ATI didnt include it in the x800 series. By the time its mass produced/coded in all the games, everyone will have a current generation card and not an "OLD" x800 series.

"...most complex shader program in Half life 2 is 90 instructions long. Shader model 2.0b is limited to 768 instructions which is more than enough.

Shader model 3.0 is limited to 65536. Crytek's most complex shader that it uses to creat incredible looking water in Far Cry is 50 instructions long. "

Wow. You learn something new everyday. (Edited to remove slightly fan-type comments in original article :p)

How about vampire: bloodlines? Doesn't that use the source engine?

It uses the source engine, but I am not sure if it uses SM 3.0.

I'll have to check it out.

Painkiller does not currently use SM 3.0.
The Painkiller expansion pack (Painkiller: Battle out of Hell) adds SM3.0.

Just so people know, this original quote is from an Inquirer article relating a speech given by an ATI PR spokesperson to the press at the annual ATI meeting in London. It helps to know the original context of quotes, you know ;) Seeing as ATI (and nVidia for that matter) love to skew information to make them look good, I would wonder about the accuracy of the above statement. Can anyone here confirm shader instruction legnth used for water in patch 1.3 of Far Cry?

I recognized this one. For everyone else, the link is http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19773

Exactly. That's the point of this thread.
I thought it was already out. At least it says it is on the publisher's page.

I just looked it up on ebgames and it has a 11/28 release date. Shoot me with a wooden stake, i was a week early. ;)

since the ceo of crytek was at the event i guess he would have said something about it if it was a lie

Ya, I think the CEO of crytek would say something, some of you guys swear SM3 is the coming of christ lol.
Most, "SM3" games only have a few lines of code added, a few lines of SM3 code!= SM3 game.

Yeah, scratch current ea games from the list. I got part of the list from a bad source. Future games are supposed to have SM3.0. But by then ATI will have a SM3.0 part anyways.

more SM3.0 games:
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault out

Pitfall: Lost Expedition not out
Soul Quest not out

The link is the first link in this thread. It's the origin of this thread. I didn't think I needed to specify ;)

Yep, it sure is. I didn't check it out the first time around.

I sure do. What good are shaders if each one isn't a phone book worth of code? There's nothing wrong with being sceptical of self-glamorizing 'facts', btw.

ati didnt include it b/c they couldnt fit it on the silicon probably. too much transistor space .

its almost like voodoo 3 vs tnt2.

tnt2 can do 32 bit color.. voodoo 3 cant.

i like 32 bit color.

Funny how some of you guys are still "brainwashed" by that special FarCry video showed at the Nvidia 6800 launch show.
"Wow, that is SM3 dot 0, cool!!!", the Nv PR guy stated. But I think you all missed Cervat Yerli's comment on that; "yes, all these cool effect's can be done with 2.0 and 3.0".
Besides this, Ati isn't stuck with plain 2.0 as it can do 2.0b either, which has a lot more then sufficient shader instructions that this gen of cards can handle.

Ati made the right choice: don't spill transistors on shader lenghts that the core can't handle, and thanks to this decision their cores can handle higher clockspeeds (=more fillrate).

They did such a fine job pushing the cores that they crapped out on availability.

Also you guys might want to add Pacific Fighters to your SM3 list. It uses some VS3 features apparently, and since there is no VS2.0b the red team is shit out of luck.

so all these games have visuals that ati cards cant display?
SM3.0 adds speed not visuals. Yeah, SM2.0b seems almost as fast but it's a hack rather than a proper defined standard like SM3.0 (which is required for DX9.0c). I'd rather have SM3.0 now so I don't have to sell my card midway through next year to get it. :)

ATi PR couldn't have said it any better (or any different). :p

The real reason is that they wanted to save on an assload of extra transistors in the R420 core and therefore save money and crank the MHz up a bit.

So when SM3.0 becomes widespread next year you're saying everyone will sell their 'old' X800 cards and get new ones? Damn, it's expensive to be an ATi owner!! :D

EXACTLY. I don't plan on upgrading from this card until 2006 [right before UE3 and Oblivion hopefully].

SM3.0 is not "the standard" next year, by the simple fact that 80% of all the cards people own at that time are still 2.0. (GFFX, R300/R350/420).
You really think game developers will produce sm3.0 only games? How do they want to sell these to Ati/GFFX owners? Ignore them? (=making less profit)

I think you can safely say that for the next 2 years the game standard is 2.0. (3.0 and 2.0b will be added for the cards that can handle it.) In the end 3.0 will become the standard, but by that time your Nv40 is 2 or 3 generations behind (and definately can't handle the shader lenghts anymore).
