where are the AMD cards?

ok i am mining on my 2 7970GHZ vapor-x,

i am trying to get more, but i am unable to find anything online from 7950 upward.

i know miners are buying, but why there is no enough supply? it is a lost opportunity for AMD and its re sellers not to offer the cards to meet the demand.

if they this keeps happening how are they are expecting to have good quarterly results?

I would venture to say that AMD is more than happy to sell as many cards as they are able to produce. Judging by some of the other threads, it seems that people are buying AMD cards in bulk to mine which is leading to the limited supply.

So to come out and blame AMD for not having enough supply is pretty short sided. How is AMD to know Bitcoin/Litecoin and other cypro-currency is going to blow up leading to massive demand of their products?

That said, I do see 7870 and R9-270's in stock. I know they are not as beefy as the higher end cards but they are more efficient and would allow you to mine. You could always build another machine with an AMD APU and a few of the 270's in it and you would have an efficient mining system that still easily made you money.

they can flood the market with R280 and R290, the products are just been released, so if they overshoot supply they can simply sell them later.

they are already going far beyond MSRP anyway.

their market share numbers will look crazy, Nvidia should really consider making their cards miners friendly.

N would have to build their cards like AMD makes thiers, part of the reason why Radeons are great for SHA256 operations where N cards are good for Folding, they simply are built different, Radeons are far superior in massively parallel operations, the best Nvidia card to do this is a tesla based card forget name was ~ 720MH/s which is about the same as a 7970, is there no R-280x available? 7870 really are ok miners but for the wattage 7950/7970/280x are by far the better card to go for, 450 to ~750MH/s is a huge jump for such a small increase in overall wattage.

You have to know that they just do not have the capacity to "Flood" the market with the high end chips... I agree that NVidia would benefit from giving its cards a bit more ability when it comes to mining.

Right now the limited supply of 290's really boils down to the switch from reference to custom cards and the limited supply of the chip itself.

The 280 is a very mature chip though and I would assume that its supply should be far greater than it is, but, we have had a mad rush of bulk buying in order to mine.

but, we have had a mad rush of bulk buying in order to mine.

Damn right. It's sweet that AMD are getting return on their investment, kicking Nvidia in the head and -driving down prices-. Simultaneously it's very irritating that the 'good deal' realization hit everyone at the same nanosecond, leading to price gouging and unavailability. Supply and demand writ small. :/

This is a bump in the road. Later, when supplies of silicon are firmer, and the mad rush dies down (or Bitcoiners mine themselves into oblivion), the cards will be available for normal folk.

I can't wait to see what the non-reference-design cards performance figures are. It's probably the most exciting time of the last 5 years in the computer industry, at least, if you're in the market for a kick-arse video card :)

After selling my 7950 I figured it would be fairly easy to get a hold of a reference 290... lol, guess I should have checked first. :(

There seems to be a bigger issue surrounding this whole gpu shortage issue...

Where are the other online retailers?

newegg
amazon

...?

That can't be it can it?

sites like bestbuy don't carry the high end stuff, those can't be the ONLY primary portals for high end gpus, or are they?

It's kind of astonishing, that if amazon/newegg are emptied out, you are SOL. Where are the other online retailers that sell pc hardware and gpus ?

NCIX is backlogged like crazy cause their servers couldn't keep up with volume over the weekend apparently from my conversation with them.

Not impressed.

Newegg, Amazon, Tiger Direct, NCIX, Micro Center (they have a online store, most people only think about the retail), and OutletPC are the first that come to mind. There is also 3BTech but they usually don't have much stock. So no, it's not only Amazon and the egg.

This same type of shortage happened when BTC first got big in the summer of 2011. Took a while for Radeon 58xx's to become available at reasonable prices...

those other sites pale in comparison to the depth and breadth of an amazon/newegg. microcenter has no amd cards on the site above the 270x, maybe that is because of shortages, but at least newegg lists things out of stock, letting you know what they DO carry.

tiger direct has a paltry gpu section for amd, and btw, has a 7870 listed for over 350... just awful.

ncix has stuff, but again, a pale comparison to a newegg and amazon.

There are only TWO top tier online retailers for tech, amazon and newegg, and of those two only newegg has an interface geared around finding computer hardware easily. (come on amazon, get subset stores with different layouts, seriously)

Because there is a 3-6 month lead time for production and miner boom has occurred over a time frame shorter than that.

Like all booms it will bust and AMD can't count on that demand being there by March-June 2014 since they tend to bust in a unpredictable fashion.

Therefore it'd be idiotic (due to the risk of having excessive inventory sitting around that would have to be marked down accordingly once the boom ends, which would be a huge negative from a financial perspective) of them from a business stand point to try and target that "market".

Also if AMD is selling everything they make at or higher than MSRP then they're guaranteed to have a good quarterly result at least as far as their GPU division is concerned. AMD's problem right now is their CPU side of things.

Just use Google shopping or pricewatch.com to find other sellers. Tons of them out there. Make sure to check if they're reputable with a site like resellerratings.com before you go buying anything from them though.

Generally anything super cheap or expensive is going to be a scam site so don't even click on them or at least make sure you've got NoScript on and Java disabled.

I don't think there's any shortage from AMD at all. My theory is that the e-tailers (specifically newegg) are creating this so called shortage by listing cards as out of stock when they are actually in stock. Doing so would raise demand and in return, they raise prices. Just the other day I was browsing R9-280x cards at newegg. It was about 1am and there were none in stock. Then I went back to check an hour later at 2am and all of a sudden there were Sapphires (non toxic) in stock. Surely a delivery truck didn't come at that time of night that only had the non Toxic Sapphires

I sold my 7970 and I just bought it in past week. Temptation was too high, over $100 in profit and I think I should have listed it for higher. Replaced it though with another 7970 for the same price I paid for my first one (270). Will keep this one, unless the prices get into the 600s!

I'm astounded that the non-reference 290 series haven't arrived yet. That's correct right? These are certainly interesting times for a techy to be living in. From the POV of someone completely disinterested in mining, it's pure fun and entertainment. Then again, would suck to be in the market for an AMD GPU for gaming purposes and be unable to find one at what were very reasonable prices 2 months ago.

I'm currently RMAing a PC 7950 for an [H] buyer, and I wonder if he was mining with it. I like the guy so I'm going to take care of him no matter how the RMA goes but I feel a twinge of pain for all these poor cards being put through the ringer. The only time I've seen a BTC program load up on the Frankenfire setup I had previously, they let out a 1 second long cry of pain (I assume it was coil whine, maybe it was my psu?) and then got to work. After 12 hours of mining, undervolted yet hot as shit, I gave up on that scene without looking back and let triplemining.com keep the 18 cents they estimated I had earned.

That's exactly why I'm skeptical of buying any used AMD 58XX cards or newer now. Most buyers will now add in the post "never used for mining", which tells me it was probably used for mining. Same
with never overclocked! ;)

was finally able to score a 290 earlier tonight on newegg.

woot

(paid $409 for the ASUS)

AMD stock going up maybe? Hopefully the media will blow this out of proportion

it seems that every major retailer and etailer in Canada and the US is sold out of anything 7950 and up. including 290s, AMD must be loving the crypto currency craze, however ltc is down to 26 and btc to 870 and dropping.... so if it keeps going down expect to see a lot of 7950s and 7970s, and 280x cards up for sale second hand =D or a lot of open box items =p

Now that I have a 1440p Qnix, I reallllly could use those freaking AIB cards already. My 660Ti is getting its ass kicked.
