I was planning on building a SLI rig but dont wanna drop the cash on two ultras if they will be overtaken in the next month or so....any new on Nvidia's counter to the x850?

Thanks

Oh, fan boy posts WILL be reported

I seriously doubt it, considering that the 6xxx line is doing so well. My suggestion is to get dual 6800GTs.

But, if you can afford it, go for the ultras,

Be careful though, most SLI boards only have 1 space between each PCI-E slot, so if your card has a 2 slot cooling, the first cards fan will be blocked a fair bit by the second card. I would just get 2 6800GTs, and put NV silencers on them and overclock 'em to Ultra speeds.

My $0.02

I think it's a good question and I don't know the answer.

The 6xxx series may indeed be doing well, but there has been a sudden change recently in who is seen as having the fastest card. Previously it was neck and neck between the 6800U and the X800XT, with the XT PE being seen as mostly vapourware. Now, I've started seeing websites openly stating that the X850 XT PE is the fastest card you can buy. Given that it's simply a slightly overclocked version of an earlier product, I don't see why nVidia won't try to emulate this by releasing a refresh product of their own to try and retake the lead. Perhaps I'm being naive.

EDIT - I also plan to go SLI (probably waiting for an AMD dual core CPU at the same time) and I'm going to be waiting to see what comes in the next few months.

i don't beleive there will be a refresh now. maybe a supped up refresh of the nv4x core later this year but i think a lot is being focused into dual-cored gpu's now.

I think the above posters are right. For now the counter is SLI. This allows nv to put more time into engineering a "better" part. Instead of what we got last year (minor speed bumps with the refreshes). Kudos to nV on this one!

Their "counter" costs 2 times as much.
The least NV could do is pull some more FPS out of their ass like that usally do.
