I'm going to blow £800+ on my PC around October/November time, mainly the graphics card. At the moment i have an ASUS 5870 v2 on my list, but i would like pay the difference to get the extra performance of the GTX 480 but i do not want the heat more importantly the noise.
I am into music recording/production as well as general music listening, the last thing i want is noise of a graphics card whining.
There are rumours of a GTX485 that i assume like the 285 will be slightly fast but mainly cooler and quieter, if so then this is my card, just don't know if/when it's being released.
 
there are no GTX 485 rumors. lucky for you it doesnt matter because you're months away from buying.
 
The GF104 was somewhat of a slimmed down but optimized GF100. Nvidia has to design a new high end chip for a 485 or 490 or whatever. I'm sure they're waiting or ATI to release new cards this winter before releasing there's especially now that they will dominate the mass market with the 460.

I was on the fence and was prepared to wait another 4 to 6 months for a 512 core Fermi, but I want wanted to get better performance out of my system now - so I got a 480. Had the rest of my system been more long in the tooth, the 460 might have convinced me to go SLI.

There's no 485 coming any time soon. Nvidia will be working on filling out the lower market segment with fermi variants. The 460 is just the first big shot across the bow. And you probably won't even see a 490 (ie dual gpu) until after southern isles hits.
 
Ok yep been looking around and i'm getting the same results that basically a shrunk die 4 series is unlikely to be this year anyway.

So, any suggestions for £325-£375 range, quiet and powerful? I would prefer to go back to nVidia as im much more of a fan of their drivers but i'm open to suggestions.

Since we don't have a crystal ball it's hard to tell what's going to be the best in 4 months! :p
 
Sorry i was just hoping for some predictions, thoughts and idea's of price drops or maybe advice based on previous trends etc.
I know there's the Vapor-X series from Sapphire that do ATi, there could be an nVidia alternative from a different vendor i could look out for? Maybe EVGA or somebody releasing an all in one watercooled GTX480 with intergrated heatsink/pump/res with a radiator you can mount that set for the next month or something? (would be pretty cool).
