when will PCs be able to transcode video instantly?

Or at least very nearly instantly? My newest system is to the point where everything I do with it happens very nearly instantly, with the glaring exception of video work. Transcoding and encoding operations can easily take hours to complete.

Anyone have a solid idea when processors will be able to handle tasks like this very nearly instantly? 5 years down the road? 10? More?
 
I don't think this is ever going to happen.. unless they stop improving quality of the video - as you know, playback of a HD video does require some CPU horsepower.. or they finally develop that quantum computer :p
 
It'll never happen. As computers get faster the codecs will get more complex and use more horsepower.
