When will card prices finally drop?

The 6800/x800 has been $300, 6800gt/x800pro has been $400, and the 6800ultra/x800xt has been $500, ever since this new generation of cards came out in the middle of last year. I was hoping for a price drop after the holiday season but that did not happen. I want to buy a 6800GT as it seems to have the best value right now, but it is still too expensive for me. Does anyone know when prices are supposed to drop on these cards?
 
the next gen didnt come yet...x850xtpe dont count imo...so too bad
 
So you are saying that prices will drop only after the next gen comes out? They remain the same from the day of release until a year later when the newer cards are out?
 
they may drop 5-10% be4 next generation. but the big break doesn't come until next gen arrives.
 
The new generation cards have rarely been in more than adequate supply. If there was a glut of all models on the market, no doubt the prices would have fallen - there seems to be plenty of 6800nus around and prices seem quite competitive on these.

Wait and see if the X800XL comes to AGP - it's only just hitting the shops in PCI-e now and no confirmed plans that I've seen that it WILL be released for an AGP slot. If it does come it's about the same speed as a 6800GT, but supposed to be substantially cheaper as it's pitched at $299.

On the other hand, Confucius say "he who holds his breath for a new gen card to reach the shops at RRP will be buried on Tuesday"
 
Judging from the benchmarks in this article, the X800XL comes very close to the 6800GT and X800Pro in performance. The same is true with the BFG 6800OC card. How can it be that both the X800XL and the BFG6800OC cost about $100 less than these cards, and offer very similar performance? This looks like a very good value, I never knew that cards like this existed in the $300 market. Is there anything else I should know about the X800XL or the BFG6800OC before choosing them over the 6800GT or X800Pro?
Strangely, I can't find the X800XL in any online stores :confused:.

true for the xl being almost as good as the 400 bucks cards..but the 6800nu is not....unless the pipes are unlocked...
 
Yes, I realize that now. Is the X800XL the best video card money can buy for around $300 USD? It seems like it is by far best price/performance value - does anything even come close in terms of this?
 
Prices will drop when demand does, ethier by having enough stock to supply the big spenders or when the next gen comes out or is paper launched.

Nothing is close at its price. It remains to be seen whether or not it actually sells for $299 or whether it ends up going for $350 or so due to short supply. Also it's not confirmed for AGP yet as far as I'm aware.
 
I'm willing to bet the 6800GT goes down soon in reaction to the X800XL . I'm guessing about $329.99.

Its the best card for $300 but you can't buy it for $300 and probably wont be able to until ATI is able to ship large quantities of them. Its also a PCI-E card so you'll have to buy a PCI-E motherboard as well. ATI may or may not come out with an AGP version in the future.
 
The AGP 6800 Ultra has taken a dive down in price, they are pretty easy to get for under $470. The market is heavily saturated with them too so id expect further drops soon.
 
Has anyone heard any rumors as to when the next gen cards will come out? Several months ago, I remember seeing rumors on [H] about ATI working on the R520 and NVidia cancelling their next gen card, so they could focus on something even better.
The rumor mill has been strangely silent. It's almost February - ATI and NVidia should be sending out revew samples in a few months, right?

I think this is a pertinent question given that it should affect the price of the current generation. Does anyone have an idea? If the review samples arrive soon, we might just be able to buy them sometime in late 2009.
