When reformatting what do you install first?

Ok quick question,

I'm planning on reformatting again, the only game I'm going to have on my system for now is going to be UT2004 Demo. Other than that it will be mostly benchmarking programs etc. When installing new stuff what should I install first? I've always thought

1)Security Updates (obviously)
2)Mobo drivers
3) video drivers
4)anti-virus
5)everything else

After installing then performing a defrag on the HD, is this the correct way to set it up? Also, will installing things in a certain order have any effect at all on performance?

Thanks!

i dont think it matters what order you install stuff as long as you install all of it. or at least thats what i have always believed.

If you have broadband/DSL/cable modem, I suggest you install antivirus software and/or firewall first. I usually install mine offline, then I hook up my connection to get upgrades.

My order would be:

1) Antivirus/Firewall (I install both at the same time)
2) Video Drivers
3) Security updates
4) Mobo drivers
5) Everything else

I install 1 and 2 using their installation discs. Afterwards, I go online and get all the up-to-date drivers and updates for my programs. For everything in 5, I install all the programs first, then find all the upgrades and add-ons online. (I also have a folder of all my online downloads so that when if I have to make an impromptu reformat, I can burn these downloads on a disc to save myself some trouble.)

You want to install drivers first - chipset, then video, then other crap, then install all the updates, then install your antivirus and firewall.

It won't affect performance, but it will help keep your Registry squeaky clean.

my usual order:

OS
mobo
video
sound
directx
update windows and all that
everything else.

whe rebuilding a computer from nothing i do the following

disconect from lan
format and install OS
install all drivers
install anti- virus
install SP1 from CD
install Most security fixes from CD
update antivirus defs from floppy (ok ls-120 but same thing here :D)
connect to lan
get all securty patches (at same time) reupdate Norton (all updates not just NAV)
get all other windows patches
get all other programs upto date (either from File server of internet)

done
total time about 3 hours or so (os install longest step :()

hope this helps.
