Would it be better to try and achieve a higher OC by using JUST the base 200Mhz with a higher multiple?

Im currently running at 17.5 at 204mhz, as a max stable OC, and the ram is running slightly overclocked to something like 1088 due to the increase of the 200--->204, at 5-5-5-15 timings. When I try and increase it beyond that, through any means, either a bump in multiplier or in clock speed. It will not boot. Im wondering if it would be worth sacrificing the timings a bit, to say, 6-6-6-18, to increase the overall clock speed, either by a multiplier increase, a clock speed increase.

P.S. I forgot the name of the base 200mhz, its HT or something. I cant remember, im out on a ship right now, so I cant just look at it. =).

Any feedback would be helpful.
 
There's really no advantage to increasing the HT reference clock unless you need to achieve DDR2 clocks over 1066MHz. If you could post your other BIOS settings related to the OC such as CPU and NB voltages, then perhaps I could say why it's not POSTing. Also, what was the highest OC you were able to stabilize with multipliers only? Did you increase the FSB right off the bat or did you start with the multiplier? Basically, more information is needed about your situation in order for anyone to make informed comments.
 
with a black edition cpu you only need to change the multiplier and voltage.. you do not need to mess with the FSB unless you are trying to overclock the memory like The Pharaoh said..

So I guess there isnt any real reason to OC the FSB until I have reached a plateu with the multiplier?

I will get back to you guys with my BIOS settings when we pull back into port today.

Max OC i achieved bootable with just the Multiplier was 18.5. I think that has more to do with the temperature than it has to do with the voltage, as it would idle at about 42C, and hit loads of upwards of 57-58. I have a True 120 black on it right now, but I havent attached a fan yet. Going to order that today.
 
It's actually quite impressive that you've hit 3.6-3.7 already without even using a fan. You're correct that there's no need to increase the FSB until you hit the multiplier limit. The FSB will allow you to work up from there in smaller clock speed adjustments than the multiplier would afford.

These Phenom II chips are much more limited in OCing by heat than by voltage as you might have noticed. I think once you get a fan installed you should be able to hit 3.8GHz considering what you've achieved so far.
 
It doesn't really matter. On my mobo anyway, you can adjust the multi of pretty much every system clock, so you can keep your CPU_NB, HT, ram busses at whatever speed you want using a combo of fsb and multis.
