Hey guys, I've been out of the loop for quite some time. I'm wondering when the next generation of video cards is coming out? I'm currently looking at a 4850x2 or 4870 and if the next release of video cards is right around the corner then I would rather wait for that.

Your help and input is much appreciated.

If you can afford to wait for another month or two you would probably be better off. With Nvidia releasing the new GTX 295 at CES the first week of January, I would imagine ATI will be right on their heels to release some news of their own.

I think the dx11 cards come out second half of 2009.

There might be a die shrink in the first half of 2009, for ATI, might be just the R740, which is rumored to be aimed at the 9600gt/9800gt range.

Thank you for the replies.

In your opinion... do you think I should wait? I understand there will always be something better, but this close? My 3850 isn't cutting it for me anymore.

The 4800 series are still great.

I'm sure the drivers can be improved.

The only real gain I think you have by waiting is price drop, but the GTX260 and 4800 series (-x2) are already in a very affordable price point.

If It were me (and given your comment about your current card), I wouldn't bother waiting.

Alright! i'll probably not bother waiting and get something now. Thanks guys.

if you want ATI, with that current system, couldn't go wrong with a 4870 1gb.

I don't think the die shrink will be targetd at the high end, so much as a new product for the 120ish dollar range
