i read through a number of articles on SED that were dated to 2003.

toshiba is supposed to have converted a number of their high-end production
facilities to turn out nothing but SED monitors. aren't they dont yet ?

all of the articles stated that SED was on the horizon. where is this horizon ?
 
Production of 50+" SED HDTVs has started already, with the first displays appearing around Q2/Q3 2006. Production will ramp up through 2006 and 2007, so expect affordable (as in, you can afford a 40+" LCD right now) SED HDTVs to appear in 2007/2008.

I've no data on when we might see SED computer displays (although you could use a HDTV for this ;) ).

OLED will probably keep a strong presence in the mobile market (cellphones, MP3-players, other gadgets with displays), while SED will conquer the rest of the display market.

OLED is just a bit more flexible and smaller than SED displays, which helps when you try to cram as much stuff as possible in a miniscule gadget's casing :)

Ditto, OLED will probably rule in small form factor uses, but for large scall uses for TV's and computers, SED will become the defacto and can't wait. Until then, my 2405fpw is my bitch.

Different marketplace, OLED will be used where very thin displays are needed. They could make paper that changes for example, paint a wall and have it display what you want. Imagine wallpaper that you program =D
 
don't hold your breath. It'll be a while til you can get a 24" Dell SED for <$1000 :)

It's called eInk, or something similar to that ;)

An OLED display still requires current to keep the image displayed. eInk is static, i.e. it requires no current to maintain an image, only to change it.

I've heard of that stuff, but I've only seen it in one color.

A version featuring actual greys has been out in Japan (where else? :p ) for a while in an eBook reader.

Colours are also possible with this technology, albeit more difficult to achieve. I believe they already use a similar technology for billboards (which can have giant pixels, so quite easy to achieve).

I agree with you here. I should have been more specific by stating that I was refering only to the Television market.
