What are factors in a game that would make having higher memory in a video card more crucial?

In 2 games like EQ 2 and the upcoming Battlefield 2, what are feature of the game where video card memory is important. I.E. 256MB compared to 128MB

128 mb graphics=1024x768 to 1280x1024 resolution for optimum performance...

256 mb= 1280x1024+ resolution....which uses more video texture to utilize the extra memory.

a 9600pro 256mb card= NONO..useless

a 9800pro 128mb and 9800pro 256mb= very minimal increase from 128mb to 256mb

if ya want to have 256mb videocard...get at least a x800pro or 6800gt...anything else under there 128mb should be fine

I don't think that having additional video ram will increase fps at all; it only reduces in game hitches by cutting back your video card's texture swapping.

For example, Doom3 at Ultra quality may have decent fps in theoretical benchmarks but it probably would have so many in game hitches that it wouldn't be playable on any of today's video cards (at least until the 512mb cards hit the shelves).

X800XL!!! ;)

Anyways, yeah aZn is right on it.

Sometimes a 128MB 9600 Pro for example, will preform better than a 256MB card. They can usually probably overclock better too...

I'm not sure I follow the correlation between screen resolution and the amount of texture data any given map or scene might contain. I think it just so happens that the cards that run well in the middle resolutions (i.e. 1024x768) also tend to run best with mid-level details which means the highest rez texture files aren't used (at medium settings) and therefore not loaded into memory on the video card.

Could you play at 800/600 6x/8x would that utilize video card memory.
