When Did This Happen?!

I just loaded up my folding machine after a lengthy run of down time and after reinstalling the OS ( Win 2k3 x64) and loading the newest geforce beta drivers my CPU utilization is next to zero for all four GPU clients! When did they discover this breakthrough!? Now the 8 CPU core seem wasted. Thankfully it's two 55W opterons.

Do you guys think I should replace these opterons with a dual core? My motherboard has 2 northbridges sucking power too.

run WCG it can run up to 16 cores.. and run the FAH gpu client.. the cpu utilization think with nvidia was fixed a couple months ago with the 5000 series WU's.. 0-1% cpu usage on my x2 be-2350 so i just run WCG on the cpu..

I'm worried about power usage though :\. What do you think the difference would cost wise swapping the two quad core 55W cpu's with a 3ghz wolfdale? How much energy do you think the dual nvidia 680a chipsets are drawing?

wolfdale = 65w TDP.. so if your just going with a single wolfdale.. then its a lower power draw then the 2 quad cores at 55w which comes out to 110w TDP.. but then again.. odds are you will want to overclock your e8400.. so the whole TDP thing doesnt matter..

at idle id say the chipsets are probably drawing under 50w.. full load probably some where around 100w.. but thats if your using them for video.. if your not.. then its probably going to be a lot less..

in the end id say the most important thing is how efficient your PSU is.. if its an 80plus bronze or silver certified psu... (and for all those people that will argue with me.. yes i know there are psu's that are over 80% efficiency that arent certified..)

dollar wise id say with the dual quads your probably spending about 10-15 dollars extra a month in power then you would be if you had an e8400 @ stock speeds..

It was the 180.60 drivers that dropped the CPU load right down for the nVidia client.
If you use earlier drivers the useage still pegs at 100%.

As for power useage.
For your dual Opterons multiply the CPU power by 1.5 to get the folding power useage, 55 watts x 2 cpu's x 1.5 = 165 watts.
For a single CPU system multiply CPU power by 2 to get the folding power usage, 65 watts x 2 = 130 watts.
They are rough figures but probably in the right area, so you'll save around 40 watts dropping from 8 cores to 2 if you keep the CPU's under 100% load.

Ps. Even with earlier drivers you could run upto 4 nVidia clients on one CPU core without any loss of points.

Luck ........... :D
