When can we expect next generation to be purchasable by common user? Anyone know anything about it being worth it? in market for new stuff, i want nf4 but i dont wanna get vid yet =/
 
It depends on your defintion of common user. When you say common user, do you mean poor people, homeless people or people with more than 5 digits in their bank account?

if your video card is common user, id say about 1.4 years
 
My guess is if we are LUCKY

Mid next year like July is when we could buy them. But at the current rate we are going at, I doubt it. Perphaps late next year before we can actually get one in hands.

If you consider the fact of DX 9.0C support in current Nvidia cards, next gen is here now. They typically have 6 month product cycles though.

There's still alot of room for improvement. 9.0c support isn't really the be-all-end-all of video card processing power. I would gladly welcome a nice speed bump and added functionality to the current crop of 6800s... maybe that would make other 'next-gen' features like HDR perform better.
 
Since I purchased my eVGA 6800 Ultra from newegg, I guess that makes me a "common user".

Anyhows, I don't need a next gen video card - fast nuf already :D

we can probably expect the next generation video cards to be purchased by the common user when the next generation cards are available
 
I would expect next gen cards to be introduced sometime in April or May, which means they wont be available for purchase until late summer. Thats just my opinion. Nobody knows for sure not even ATI or Nvidia, so its a we'll know when they know situation.

Not even close, the Nv40 lags with some more advanced DX9 features.

can always add more performance, better OpenEXR HDR performance, more features such as AA with OpenEXR HDR, etc...

i'd say SM 4.0 is the next generation, SM 3.0 is like a bridge to SM 4.0 which is unified PS/VS, with SM 4.0 we may finally see video cards doing real time geometry processing
